“what a treat”
Reviewed 19 January 2009

I first stayed at one belvedere in 2006 as a stop-over on my way to Australia and was completely won over by the warm and friendly reception I was given by hosts Rob and Charl. They strike just the right balance between being informal and amusing hosts without encroaching on guests personal space.

Similarly the guest house is welcoming and unpretentious yet provides all the facilities (and more) than you could expect for this type of establishement. The food, facilities rooms and surroundings (inc a dinky little pool) could not be faulted

I was delighted to return in 2008 for a longer stay and found everything just as enjoyable as on my previous visit

Stayed March 2008

Have now stayed twice at One Belvedere, have recommended to friends and plan to visit again very soon.
Rob and Charl are two friendly and welcoming owners - very willing to chat with you if you want, and have had pleasant evening glasses of wine on the terrace. Very caring when a chest infection brought down from London necessitated a trip to the doctor.
One Belvedere is situated in a quiet part of Cape Town, overlooking the city and with Table Mountain just behind. A few minutes in car or taxi takes you to the centre or the waterfront. An excellent breakfast on the verandah in summer looking at the view is a great start to the day.
Rooms are pleasantly furnished clean and characterful - and quiet and relaxing to stay in.
Overall a first class base for Cape Town and the surrounding areas.

Each year I migrate to Cape Town to escape the worst of the British winter. Where do I stay? There is simply only one choice I would consider - Guest House One Belvedere.

I discovered this wonderful little South African gem in 2006 when I was looking for a "Men Only" guest house. Since then I have stayed every year for 2 to 3 months. What makes it so special I hear you ask? Well, I'm not sure if my description can do it justice but I'll try. Here goes....

Nestling at the base of Table Mountain in the delightful Gardens district of Cape Town, One Belvedere enjoys wonderful views of Table Mountain and the City. These magnificent vistas can be enjoyed by every guest as all rooms lead directly onto the first floor wrap around veranda. This elevated position gives privacy and security in equal measure. It's also a lovely way to mix with fellow guests, just sitting and sipping a glass of wine and watching the sun go down.

Although the guest house enjoys a long and wonderful history each room has been refurbished in a clean, modern and unfussy style with tasteful, efficient en-suite facilities. I have stayed all over the world, in some of the most amazing hotels and guest houses but One Belvedere is the one venue where I feel truely at home.

The great vibe you'll experience as a guest is very much due to Rob & Charl the owners. They always go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and settled without ever imposing on those who prefer a degree of privacy. Several of the guests have become really good friends to me.

The communal facilities, which include a pool, sun terrace, jacuzzi and a steam room, are always clean and beautifully maintained so there's a way to relax and unwind for everyone.

As a guest that stays for lengthy periods I also find the free wireless internet facilities a very useful way to stay in touch with the rest of the world.

So, as you can tell by my repeated return visits, I'm a huge fan of this exceptional guest house, the lovely owners and their very positive approach to their guests. If you'd like to see what I've been talking about why not take a look at their terrific website at www.onebelvedere.co.za which can provide you with a virtual tour of the entire guest house.

Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, don't miss out on the great breakfasts. The conversation and laughter flow as freely as the coffee.

If you've enjoyed my review perhaps we'll meet round the pool on my next trip.

Cheers, Steve (from London)

I stayed for 2 nights and loved it.

Great location at the top of town just under Table Mountain but an easy cab ride to the village and waterfront.

The room was very nice and I loved the old shower.

Rob and Charl are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble and they pointed me in the direction of some great restaurants.

If I stay again, I would probably have breakfast at Carluccis which is just 2 blocks away.

4th time I stay at One Belvedere Guesthouse in Cape Town. Have always been very charmed by the friendly and relaxed attitude of the owners, which makes you feel like 'coming home away from home' (even if this sounds like a cliche).
Especially like their breakfast, which is served on the terrace, in the shade of some trees, with a lovely view on Table Mountain... Several times I was invited for a glass of (S. African!) wine at the pool after returning from the beach and had a chat with them while enjoying the last rays of sunshine.
It just feels like heaven!
Location is perfect! Only 5 min. drive to downtown, but far enough from the nightlife to assure a quiet night sleep...
If you want to refill your batteries, this is the place to be.
This combined with the excellent facilities the guesthouse offers (nice and clean rooms / pool with sunbeds / jacuzzi / steamroom / ...), I would certainly recommend a stay here!
ENJOY!

Wouldn't recommend this guesthouse. Roaches and ants a plenty! Owner not the friendliest either. There are many other gay guesthouses available in Cape Town. Look elsewhere!
