We had booked the private room and were all looking forward to a great evening at Five Flies. Sadly, the service was shocking, the appetizers took 80 mins to come out the kitchen and the food was average at best. There was no one in charge, no manager, the waiters were not efficient at all and it seemed as there was no real chef in the kitchen either. The entire evening was disaster and total embarrassment! Such a pity as the Buildings and Rooms are lovely.

We dined at The Five Flies Restaurant while visiting Cape Town based on a recommendation from our concierge, we were not disappointed! The setting of the restaurant is lovely and welcoming. The service and food are both top notch.

I visited The Five Flies Restaurant on our last night in Cape Town; it was recommended by a friend. It was actually rather disappointing. On a Saturday night at 9pm only 4 tables were busy, with the rest of the restaurant eerily empty and quiet. The waitress, although really friendly and warm, was not very experienced. The food was truly average. Nothing special about this restaurant at all. Unremarkable end to a truly remarkable holiday.

Too many things went wrong...
1) No wine list available. The waiter tried his best, but he was insecure an unsure, so my husband went to the bar to find out what is "available"
2) We ordered crab, prawns and lamb meals. The crab was raw and the prawns mushy (too old or frozen/defrosted too many times). We sent these dishes back.
3) The replacement "catch of the day" Kingklip came steamed in a foil parcel, but without any side meal... nothing just a piece of fish with mussels. On the menu it should have been with a wine & saffron sauce, but came with a thick (uncooked) white sauce. It did not mention any side meal on the menu... but i expected some veg or rice seeing it is a main meal.
4) Our friend was ill days after he ate the raw crab and spoilt his holiday!
This restaurant has no clear concept... from Thai to Belium chowder back to smoked eisbein.
If you have no real food expectation and just want to grab a Gourmet burger, then I guess it's ok. But the fine dining days are waaaay past. A real pitty, because I remember the good old days!

We eat at the 5 Flies on most of our annual trips to CT. This year was good but the format had changed to a regular a la carte menu rather than the 1,2 or 3 course fixed price options used hitherto. We preferred the latter which differentiated the restaurant from others. No problems with the food or service, it just lost a little of the entertainment factor.
