“Great Room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2014

Room was fantastic as was the breakfast. Best nights sleep in ages.

Check-in was friendly and efficient and we couldn't fault the hotel.

However ... we are compelled to note that the staff at the Rose bar left us sitting for 30 minutes and did not take our order resulting in two very thirsty customers walking out.

The breakfast although very good took ages to come and we noted at least 3 tables of guests getting up and walking out due to lack of service.

Room Tip: It is well worth splashing out for a bigger room.

My wife and Instayed for 3 nights . Our main purpose was to be in town for some business meetings, but we love Constantia and also expected to enjoy our time in the lovely surroundings. From the beginning our stay was excellent. We arrived late from an international journey, but were greeted by name and welcomed into the the lounge for a glass or two of sparkling wine while our luggage was taken to our room. After wine and an orientation we were taken to our spacious room which has lovely appointments . We've never stayed at a place with two seperate bathrooms but found that a surprisingly nice feature. Behind the hotel is the Alphen Trail , a greenway along the small river that runs for kms through Constatia. Each AM and one PM I took a long walk enjoying the other walker and runners and their many entusiastic dogs. Breakfast was on the sunny terrace outside the La Belle bakery/cafe shaded by oaks and umbrellas. We later had a meeting in one of the two lounges. Reception, lounges and the 5 Rooms Restaurant are in the historic old manor house. The historic features are maintained and enhanced with a new decor, opulent but not oppresively so. Just up the road is Chart Farm where I wentbto pick roses for my wife. Another meeting on the terrace in the afternoon, a good time and place for white wine as the meeting drew to a close. Dinner with friends al fresco at La Belle ,the more casual dining
option, was delicious and well served. More meetings the next two days. The location in this leafy green easily accessabile from the M3 makes this a great place for others to want to come to you, and with the facilities there is no need to leave. The hotel occupies one and half sides of a large grassy quadrangle while some other old Cape Dutch structures house top end quiet financial business. Late afternoon is a good time to enjoy the Rose Bar on the terrace at the back of the house overlooking the pool and lawn and the pictureque white stucco family mausoleum of the Cloete family who have owned the place for 150 years. Our second dinner was also al fresco. Coming from the nrthern hemisphere we take as much advantage of the glorious Cape weather as we can. The offerings and our choices were also excellent.
To sum up: the location ,welcome, ambience, facilities, food , and service were all 5*

Stunning breakfast in the beautiful surroundings of La Belle at The Alphen Hotel. Friendly & efficient waitrons; food arrived promptly - hot food on hot plates; fresh toast with choice of breads - the eye is particularly good; extensive menu with breakfast, lunch & dinner. Well priced to suit all budgets. Good fresh coffee & a good choice of teas including herbal teas. Nice atmosphere; sort of place you could sit in all day just to enjoy the calm ambience. Also serving an extensive range of beautiful looking pastries which I didn't sample but would go back again just to have coffee & cake. Also fully licensed. I can wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful & friendly place.

We didn't stay at the hotel, but we did go to the hotel restaurant for a dinner date. It came highly recommended from some friends so ewe thought we would give it a try.

We started the evening with a drink at the Rose Bar, which was fantastic! They offered a wide range of cocktails suiting various tastes. The bar had an infectious atmosphere, with most of the patrons staying at the hotel. The only little issue was the smoking, but we thought we had to put up with it, because the area wasn't undercover.

After the drinks we went to the restaurant which was beautifully decorated in an 'old school' style. We had three courses, which were all very good! Their signature dish, duck, was incredible and ican. Highly recommend it. The pudding was also an interesting take on a cheese cake and crime brûlée. The wine selection was extensive and the service friendly and efficient.

We can recommend the restaurant, even if you aren't staying at the hotel. It is also easily accessible from the M3.

We had a really great time at the Alphen - friendly and professional staff, great accommodation and good food. The location is superb and we really enjoyed a long walk up the Green Belt prior to a hearty breakfast. Overall would highly recommend.
