I have now been to the Alphen Hotel on several occations, and am getting the impression that they do not know what they are doing. The service is apallingly bad, the place is not clean as ther is cobwebs every where and clearly no supervision of any kind. On two occations I was there with guests for lunch, and on both you could not get a waiter, when you finally get one you wait for ever for your order, the food is always cold, nobody comes around to see if everything is in order. The restaurants are not clean the toilets are dirty. One would expect that when you have a hotel of this calliber that the Gm or his deputy would be on the floor to ensure that everything runs smoothly. It is very obvious that very little attention is given to the housekeeping, judging by the cleanliness of the hotel.

We dined in the fine dining restaurant attached to this hotel recently. There is a great buzz about it. The food is great and the service very attentive. We loved it. Fully recommend it and the cocktails are super..

We had dinner at the Alphen's restaurant. The food was good, aside from the steaks, and the bill was high. What was worst however was that our card was taken away from our table. A few days later the bank rang from England to say it had been cloned. We only used the card once in South Africa - at The Alphen. The Alphen was not helpful, even after the waiter involved ran away. We presented them with all teh bank information that showed the card was only used at their Hotel. No-one at the hotel could even offer us any gesture of goodwill for the time and trouble this caused us. The staff have to refer everything to Paul Kovensky the owner. His response, from on high, was not our problem.

I would not recommend this place to anyone

Having had coffee there a few days before we thought we would arrange a family meeting with our niece under the oak trees for lunch, on 13th March, 2009.
The food was awful, two had smoked salmon trout - it was in big bits and not nicely presented, awful - so was what they called a salad, said to contain watercress and was not fresh by any means so we did not chance eating it. The staff could see that we had not eaten the meal but made no comment. One had a toasted chicken sandwich which was OK but served with huge thick rounds of bread making it difficult to eat. One had an apple crumble with cream. It was not apple it was a type of berry and uneatable having been heated up in a microwave and was hard an congealed, the cream which was asked for in a separate disk on the side was horrible and sour. So we had eaten virtually nothing. This was known to the staff at the time but still it all came on the bill. We did not wish to make too much of a complaint at the time because of not wishing to embarrass our niece,
The bill was around R235 which we rounded up to R250, but when the bill having been taken from my credit card it had been increased to R260. For what we had we should not have been charged.
I rang later and complained to the restaurant manager, he said he would get back to me, he didn't. I rang again 2 days later, a different manager, who said he had heard about the complaint and would look into it and get back to me - he didn't. So must assume that they don't care if they get a bad name for their food. Don't they understand that customers talk to other peopleand tell them where not to go!
Toilets we in bad condition.
Go to Greens restaurant in Constantia to experience quality of food and service.
