A very different experience to the last time we were here, many years ago- the staff are friendly, informative and eager to please. If you plan to doing some wine tasting in the Constantia area, then Buitenverwachting is a must stop! Not only are their wines enough of a reason to visit, but we pre-booked a picnic so that after a very relaxed wine tasting, we had some nibbles to enjoy in the garden under the trees. It's really popular in the summer months so make sure you book- we were the last table seated. (We also took a blanket so we could stretch out on the lawn after but watch out for friendly dogs who want to sit with/on you and chickens who come over to see who you are.) Lovely afternoon with some REALLY good wines.

Our second stop today was in this rather informal place. Entering the tasting room we walked to the bar. The lady behind the counter was busy doing all sorts. The best thing of this place is you just tell them what you would like to tast and they will pore you a glas. The information was not given very willingly. We found that we had to ask to get our information about the wines. On a selling point not the best experience. The drive up to the tasting room is a long one and takes you through the fields which is very pleasant.

Visited the vineyard with our children but they were made to feel as welcome as anyone and it made us feel welcome too

We sat out in the lovely gardens and the boys played rugby whilst we sipped some of the lovely wines in the sun

A great vineyard and well worth the trip out

We had picnic twice at Buitenverwachting during our stay in South Africa in March 2014. We loved the first one so much we made sure to come back before leaving (and after having picniced at 3 other places in the meantime).

The venue is perfect when you are a family with a toddler - just spread your blanket next to the table and enjoy the food while the little one is playing. When it's time for baby's nap, just go for a walk with the pram in the beautiful garden and come back to your table when the baby has fallen asleep.

Out of the four wineries where we had picnics, at Buitenverwachting you get definitely the best value for your money.
All food in our hampers was delicious and plenty and it was obvious that they had been packed with a love for details (eg flower petals as decoration in one of the containers) and a sense for hospitality that we found was missing at other places. We loved the Bobotie bites best and felt really spoilt with three different dessert "things". For coffee, you choose any coffee you like at the nearby café - the cappucchino there was absolutely delicious.

The service by Adrienne and her team was efficient and very friendly at all times.

At our next stay in the Cape area, we will sure be back.
