“Superb start to holiday”
Reviewed 3 October 2009

Arrived at 9.30 am after overnight flight from the UK. Room was already available. On shown to our room , a hot bath had been prepared . Amazing ! Stayed 3 nights . Staff could not do enough for you. Every evening a "surprise" awaited you on your return from your night out. Highly recommended.

The entry is deceiving. Once inside the sences are overwhelmed. Beauty and friendliness abound. The staff is extremely helpful. As we entered our suite a freshly drawn bubble bath and a chilled bottle of wine awaited us. Treats on the pillow at night and a welcome home cordial each night after dinner. Quiet surroundings and beautiful grounds. I had a dispute about packages and it was resolved with deliberation. I have to say it was one of the nicest places I have stayed any where!! Thank You Lynne!

Part of this review will be personal opinion, but first some pure facts;

When we arrived at The Constantia it was raining heavily (okay I can't blame the management for that !) and to get through the security gate you have to get out of your car and press a voicecom button. I then had to wait almost a minute with repeated pressing before we got a response - the result was that I arrived looking like a drowned rat. We then got what I can only describe as a cursory welcome and we were shown to our room, the premier suite, which has a number of unusual design features such as the centralised electrical dimming units which were not explained at all to us and no there was no-one who could help with our luggage until the night porter arrived (who was very nice when he got there).

The room preparation was perhaps the worst I have ever encountered - there were a host of things missing - no laundry bag, no do not disturb sign, no ashtray (the room was no-smoking but it had a small terrace for that purpose) and no guest information book - some of these had to be asked for repeatedly. Then we discovered that neither the wireless internet or the TV actually worked. the former was fixed two days later and the latter took the night porter about 30 minutes to fix - hardly ideal after our long drive.

As I said the room has unusual features such as being entirely open plan except for the toilet - the bed sits in the middle of the room in a freestanding way and there is no separation between living space and the showers or bath. However the lighting is centralised so you can't go the toilet in the night without turning on all the lights ! The outside terrace was tiny and standing there or anywhere near the window meant that anyone in the breakfast area could see you as it had a glass roof.

Returning from our dinner on the first night the table lamps had all fused and the minibar had lost power. This was to be the first of a continual series of electrical problems which included a disastrous loss of power whilst my wife was attempting to dry her hair. This resulted in our last day (a late check out was appreciated) having a number of electricians rewiring the entire room with consequent drilling, banging etc.

Breakfast was an interesting experience - there is a reasonable buffet layout, although it fell far short in quantity and quality from other places we stayed in such as The Mount Nelson in Cape Town or Rosenhof in Oudtshoorn. When asked if I wanted a cooked breakfast I replied yes with one fried egg - result was that I was served a huge plate with one fried egg on it.

Getting a drink at the free bar turned out to be a further interesting experience - asking for a bacardi and coke resulted in a 5 minute wait whilst the coke was located and I eventually ended up with vodka. I waited until the barman left and did it myself.

Did we complain ? Oh yes we complained although there was no manager available until the third day of our stay - we made a formal complaint to her assistant and the Operations manager of The Last Word group arrived - we found her frankly unwilling or unable to really listen to our problems - her response was that we should check out - no actual help in finding somewhere else at short notice below rack rates was offered. Eventually on departure a small discount was offered (well below 10% of the of the total cost as what was already the most expensive place we stayed at during this trip).

Frankly this was supposed to be the jewel in the crown of our three week stay in the Cape. It turned out to be The Last word in a total and very expensive Fawlty Towers like experience.

We booked without high expectations of The Constantia, primarily because it wasn't expensive, but we had booked an expensive safari later in the week- so felt it was justified. To our surprise... it was one of the very best hotel experiences ever!
As we drove up in our rental car, Claire, the manager (we came to find out), greeted us BY NAME! She welcomed us in the the lounge (past the check-in, and had us sit on comfortable couches. She didn't first ask for a credit card or passport (as all hotels do) but instead asked if we would like breakfast or just some tea or coffee. Wow. We opted for everything because we just got off a red-eye flight. They made us eggs to order and anything else we wanted.
Claire came to get us when breakfast was done and pointed out the (Full) bar which she said was completely complimentary at any time. (We have never heard of this!). We filled out some minor paperwork and then she took us to our room. They had already unpacked our car and taken our luggage in without us noticing. The room was beautiful. Robes, candles, even a bubble bath with flower petals and a bottle of their private label wine being chilled next to the tub.
She had prepared a full itinerary of things for us to do, including dinner reservations, during our stay. (I had already booked reservations elsewhere- but it was such a nice gesture!).
That afternoon, we were feeling a bit under the weather and the porter went out and bought a bunch of medicine for us so we would feel better.
Upon departure, Claire had (hand-)written a note to us saying good bye and hoping we come again. She gave us gifts as we left and waved goodbye as we pulled out of the driveway.
As we left, my husband and I looked at each other and promised to find little boutique hotels (b&bs) whenever possible and no more big hotel chains- no matter how fancy!
A fabulous experience. Thank you Claire!

This guest house prides itself on incredible service, the best I have ever experienced above any 5* hotels in the world. The team is headed by the very talented Claire, and her assistants such as Beauty add such a wonderful personal and helpful atmosphere to this establishment. The rooms are stunning and you don't have to lift a finger- total relaxation. The welcome 'gift' each time you arrive back after dinner, and the helpful gentleman who sees you safely to your room is a wonderful touch. This guest house left a mark on me, I very much want to return next year and am recommending it to everyone. I hope the same staff will be there- it is such a fantastic team.

My wife and myself have traveled to and stayed at some of the best hotels but our time at the Constantia was above and beyond our previous experiences.
The level of service was delightfully attentive without being over intrusive.Things like washing our car without being asked, to the cocktails served when we retired for the night. The bubble bath and champers on arrival will always stand out as the beginning of a great 8 days in Cape Town.

We are fortunate to have stayed in Hotels all over the World, but none compare to the Constantia! Luxury is the order of the day and the staff just cannot do enough for you. The rooms are spacious, lavish, quiet and the whole setting is just perfect. You do need a car to get about, but definitely worth staying here and driving into Capetown and other areas. Breakfast is lovely and the in house Dinner should not be missed - exquisite food and attentive but not intrusive service - an absolute delight to dine here.
