“Charming, Friendly and Restful”
Reviewed 14 January 2011

Forget the idea of this being a B&B. See it more as a boutique family-run hotel. It is an amazingly well-run operation with the very best staff who exude not just friendliness but warmth and personality.

The rooms are bang up-to-date with modern, calming tones throughout and gleaming bathroom fittings. One might say they lack a little corporate in styling, but opening as they all do onto a little terrace onto the beautifully kept gardens/pool I don't think that matters one bit. A very cleverly hidden kitchenette is a real boon for those with children - adding to the amenity without detracting from the style of the rooms.

Breakfast is comprehensive, and more sensible in its offerings than the banquets that one finds in a large hotel. Everything was done very well though with more than enough choice.

A great advantage is the generally excellent evening meals that are offered (R26 for 3 courses). Having young children with us meant that we could sit down to a calm evening meal knowing that the children were safe just next door.

Although it may not be in the most beautiful part of Constantia, the gardens ensure that there is a sense of comfort and seclusion and it is well situated for exploring Constantia, Kirstenboch and the attractions down to Cape Point. There is a very decent bar/bistro just across the road.

Glen Avon nestles in the Constantia Valley, hidden behing trees and beautiful homes. The rooms are spacious, and we would recommend the downstairs pool suites. The breakfasts are superb, and the dining is in our view Michelin 1 Hat at a reasonable price. The wine selection is also local and excellent. The staff and mangement went out of their way to please. They arranged a hire car to be delivered amnd collected from Glen Avon, and a transfer to and from the Airport. While 20-25 minutes from the Waterfront this is no drawback as there are lots of experiences close by. This Lodge is one of the very best we have stayed in South Africa, and elsewhere...it genuinely deserves its rating!!

A five night stop at the end of a very busy touring holiday with friends at this delighful Guest House was just what was needed to allow us to wind down and face the return journey. The accommodation is first rate and breakfast on the terrace was a joy each morning. All the staff were endlessly cheerful and helpful and the Manager extremely willing and able to assist in all matters regarding touring and siteseeing within Cape Town and its environs.

Image flying in from Europa and arriving in the late evening, you see a friendly driver with a plate with your name on it. Welcome to South Africa and we bring you to Glen Avon. After 20 minutes you arrive and in the room there are some find snacks (it has been a long flight so you have a good excuse). Next morning you have a wonderful breakfast in the gardens and you realise: "it has started".

They also serve an outstanding diner which we enjoy. The lodge is well placed for visits in the cape area. From Capetown to Cape Point you can cover it all within an hour. In case you are into golf we can recommend Royal Cape, Eastwood and Steenburg.

If you have a rental car hired they can bring it to the lodge during breakfast. At least Europecar is providing this service for only a small extra fee.

we like Glen Avon and are happy repeaters.

When Robert Louis Stevenson said "To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive", he quite clearly wasn't on his way to Glen Avon Lodge. We have just returned from two superb weeks at The Lodge, although it was our third trip to The Cape we have only just discovered this wonderful place. From the minute we arrived to the moment we had to leave for the airport we were looked after superbly by all who work there including Tjaart, Wendy, Maike& Larny. The rooms are very clean and spacious and the bathrooms fitted out superbly, there is also a discreet kitchen area with fridge and microwave. There is a real family feel to the whole experience and nothing is too much trouble for them to organise for you. It's only 15 minutes drive from the centre of the city and is ideally located for getting around the entire region.
The day starts with breakfast on the terrace overlooking the garden, their fresh fruit "kebabs" with yoghurt are the first item to greet you, followed by everything else you would expect. We also stayed in on a couple of evenings and enjoyed superb food and wine with service to match.
Glen Avon Lodge is very good value for money and will be top of our agenda when we return to The Cape.

We chose Glen Avon on the recommendation of friends who stayed there. We had a suite which was the most luxurious room we stayed in throughout our tour to Namibia and South Africa. Very comfortable bed and lots of room with high quality wooden finish and very small kitchenete. Doors to swimming pool area and grassy surroundings around the pool made this a great place to relax and all the equipment was top class - comfortable sun beds etc. Breakfast was very pleasant on the front veranda and very good quality. Location in middle of Constantia - easy to get around and smart area. We would not hesitate to recommend this lovely place to stay - it was an old Cape Ditch house which has been sympathetically extended.

From the moment we arrived until, the sad time we, had to leave we, could not have been made more welcome. Our room was large and very thoughtfully furnished; the en-suite bathroom was to luxury standard with a wonderful walk-in shower. The equipment, towels,tea/coffee making facilities, hair dryer were all top quality as was the room servicing, which took place whilst we enjoyed a comprehensive breakfast sat on the terrace overlooking the lawn and rose borders. On a couple of occasions we enjoyed Dinner and we were extremely impressed with the Cordon bleu cooking and excellent service. Ajoy to have found such a quality location which we highly recommend.
