“No Hot Water / Bad Odor / No Heat”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2012

I spent one night at this hostel and would not have lasted another. The bathroom had a horrible smell, there was no hot water in the shower and there was no heat in the entire house. I traveled during winter and could barely sleep at night because I was so cold. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

The best pillows ever!! You’ll sleep well :o)
If you’re lucky you can get a double bed all to yourself in the dorm for the regular dorm-bed-price *Sigh* Loved it!

We booked two rooms via booking.com and received a booking.com confirmation regarding our reservation. Nonetheless, a few days later, we emailed Outeniqua travel lodge to ensure that they, too, had properly received our reservation. Although we sent several emails and also tried to contact them through their own web site, we did not get any response from Outeniqua travel lodge for several days. It looked as if Outeniqua travel lodge had disappeared without trace. We finally decided to cancel our reservation via booking.com, which according to the booking conditions of Outeniqua travel lodge, was free of charge. We received a confirmation from booking.com that our reservation had been cancelled. Some time later, we finally received an email from Outeniqua travel lodge: the owners apologized for not having answered earlier, which, according to them, was due to computer issues, and confirmed our reservation! We immediately notified them that we had meanwhile cancelled our reservation via booking.com and had received a correspondent confirmation. At that point, we were sure that this issue had been sorted out. However, three weeks later, Outeniqua travel lodge charged our credit card with an advance payment of approx. 50 EUR. As we had cancelled our reservation in due time, Outeniqua travel lodge was not authorized to do so. Nor were we sent a correspondent notification or payment receipt. It took us more than two months to get our money back with the help of our bank via a chargeback procedure.

I heard from my partner that it is an amazing place. We decided to go there for 3 nights during December 2011 and he was right, it is a great place! Beautiful, relaxing, comfortable and very friendly Dawie and Sue! We had so much fun and the Outeniqua Travel Lodge was a major part of it! We are already planning our trip and hope to stay with you again! :) I loved the little Jack Russell and sitting in the Garden in the afternoons. We had a lovely braai and relaxed by the pool during the hot summer days! I hope to see you again and thank you Sue for the advice on where to go during our stay in George!

Room Tip: I don't think there are bad rooms!

Thank you for a very relaxing stay. Well located on road into George. Safe and secure. Friendly host and Jack Russel. Rooms and shared areas well kept and clean, wish I could of had more time to use the pool.
Prefect stop over place on our way through on the Garden Route Trail.

Room Tip: Ask for a double bed if you really want one. They are limited.

First of all the given rating has nothing to do with the location or the rooms. The room(s) were clean and the location is ok and easy to find as well. The lady at the reception who helped us at first was also friendly.

What determined the 2 rating was that we had a very unpleasant experience with the owner of Outeniqua travel lodge
.
We booked 2 rooms, using booking.com when we arrived at the lodge we saw that besides a double bed each room contained 2 additional bunkbeds. We asked the owner if it was possible that we could all stay in one room, it was possible but we still had to pay for the other room.

If we would have known there were additional beds we only would have booked one room to begin with. We booked the room a month in advance so the owner could be proactive and tell us about the extra beds.

The owner said that booking.com does not recognize family rooms, which is false. The next day after our stay in George we stayed in Swellendam where we had booked a family room for the 4 of us, also later on in our trip we booked family rooms so if the owner really wanted to he could add family rooms at booking.com.

After we asked for a discount on the 2nd room the owner said " I'm not going to lose any money because of booking.com's mistakes"

What we also found very strange , there was a lock on the fridge and if you wanted something to drink you had to first get the key from the owner.

Everywhere we went so far there was a fair use policy considering beverages and you could just write down what you took from the fridge and pay on departure.

We would not recommend this place due to our experiences with the owner. Clearly the focus is on money rather than on service.

I was travelling with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely recommend the Outeniqua Travel Lodge to our friends. Dawie and Sue were very friendly and went out of their way to make us comfortable. Great stay!
