“Whale watching from your own balcony”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

Stayed here for one night and we were very impressed with the room, especially the bath in the bedroom and the little treat at bedtime. Although there is room for improvement, the bed creaked with the slightest movement and was very uncomfortable. Free WiFi would have been a welcomed gesture too.
Back to the good points, the balcony looking out to sea was brilliant as we could watch the whales in the evening from our room. We would definitely recommend Harbour House Hotel.

Room Tip: Get a romantic room.

Good location, personnel very kind, hotel to recommend
There are two things to change for a 5 star hotel: 1. it's better no flowers at all instead of putting something (made of plastic) that is not even similar to a flower; 2. upgrade the pathway between the buildings with a cover to skip rainfalls

We had a great time here and the rooms are lovely and spacious. Everything is spotless. Breakfast is huge and you can choose what you like.. Great location to see the whales and right beside the restaurants, shops and of course sea etc. All the staff were excellent for all three days and we met them all including Mr T. They were all really helpful re booking excursions even though it was through another tour operator. I would come back here again!!

This hotel is in a brilliant location and the sea views excellent! It's about 1.5hrs from capetown and in are deck location for seeing the great white sharks at gansbaii or the whales in hermanus bay, it certainly adds to your vacation.

The rooms are of good quality, it's a shame the wifi didn't work in our room but the view we had was straight out into hermanus and the ocean.

Slight negatives are that the breakfast could be improved and they don't have facilities for lunch or dinner and there is no bar but the location means you can easily walk to the great bars and resturant in town itself.

Well worth a visit.

This is a great location to whale watch, although sadly our room did not have a sea view- If I went again I would definitely book a room with a sea view. The staff were attentive and the rooms were clean and spacious. Hermanus is a great place to visit and this hotel is in the centre of the town on the sea front. The staff were very informative when it came to choosing restaurants and a whale watching boat trip. Thank you!

We only got the chance to stay one night in this hotel, which was a shame as it was a beautiful hotel in a great location over looking the sea and we were especially lucky to have great views of migrating whales right from the balcony. The staff were very helpful and recommended a lovely restaurant across the road burgandy, rooms clean and spacious and very nicely decorated. We had a lovely surprise of cake and sparkling wine when we arrived back into our room that night. I only wish our stay had been longer

We stayed in one of the apartments owned by the hotel (Le Paradis, probably 30 seconds walk away!)

Apartment specific:
Pros:
- location was excellent in terms of the sights
- nice view from the balcony
- very well maintained apartment with almost all the extras (some oddities eg given how upmarket the apartment is, strange that they do not provide a filter coffee maker; no wifi)

Cons:
- it wasn't actually the apartment we had booked (which we only realised once we were in it) - no warning or explanation given - so for example we didn't have wifi as we had expected
- the hot water ran out very quickly - the geyser is apparently not even big enough for 2 consecutive showers. For an apartment that sleeps 4, this is rather a drawback, and even after an hour and a half the water was not properly hot yet.
- The bottom floor is on street level and facing the main beachfront road, so it's not very private when you are sitting in the lounge. (The bedrooms are a floor up so no problem with privacy there.)

Re the hotel in general (as far as we interacted with it):
- we found staff generally helpful and friendly, especially the gentleman who took us to the apartment (I am afraid I forget his name) to show us how to use everything
- we used the breakfast room mainly for convenience. It is very crowded because it's very small so we constantly had people bumping our chairs etc. Staff seemed to get slightly harassed when it was full for example forgetting a request for a coffee refill. Also re another guest mentioning being charged extra for hot chocolate - we also somehow ended up with a filter coffee charge on the breakfast bill. Didn't quibble, but did feel that it seemed a bit mean. The breakfast selection was OK, not as good as other (chain or boutique) hotels I have stayed in for continental breakfasts, although to be fair the cost is also cheaper than usual.
