“Experience worth more than what I paid for!”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

The whole team (Esther,Mandy and Akhona) were very welcoming to my mother and I as I had booked a room for my mother's birthday holiday. Very clean, well kept, beautifully decorated guest house, AND VERY LIGHT ON THE POCKET! we felt very safe and well taken care of. We will most definitely be back with our whole family.

I stayed with my wife just 1 night, in our way from Cape Town to Garden Route, and considered a very positive experience in this Guest House. The hostess is lovely, the hotel is walking distance to the city centre, and our room had a lot of space and was impeccable in all details and cleanliness.

We booked a double room that we found had virtually no space for our suitcases with only a back view of a scruffy garden. There was no mirror over the bathroom sink and in order to use a hair dryer we had to look around until we finally found an accessible electrical outlet near the TV. Going out in the evening, we were told that we couldn't return through the lobby (the front door would be locked for security) but we must walk to the back and enter via the garden, which proved to be dark and un-lighted as we bumped into trees and shrubs late at night trying to find the back door and then use the key lock to our room. Breakfast was served in an open area, where we could see the proprietress frying our eggs. How inappropriate was that? Weak coffee from a filter machine was served in French Press beakers, as if we were to believe it was actually French Press coffee. The front "view" was that of a car park, quite unlike what's shown on the website, which depicts the ocean as if it's just our front, but it's nearly a 1/2 K away, beyond the car park and a fence and a lot of asphalt. The pool, if you can call it that, is small, narrow and appeared dirty. Looking around the place, we found that the so-called balcony room was not a private balcony and that anyone could walk out to the balcony and look into the room. While I respect that everyone has to make a living, we found no particular service mentality at this hotel / guest house, yet it had a very deceptive Trip Advisor "award" on the wall, which we felt was NOT deserved at all. Within 5 minutes of checking in, the proprietress was trying to book us for local shark cage dives, whale watching boat trips and into a certain centrally located restaurant, as if she had a commissioned interest in how we spent our money. It was all very suspect and quite tacky. As soon as we could find another lodging, we checked out and only then did we enjoy our stay in the lovely town of Hermanus.

Room Tip: There is none that we could discern.

The party of 4 arrived late march for one night on our way to Hout bay. We've stayed in hermanus twice before in different places that where just as nice but this was the best welcome we received from anywhere!
Close to the town, about 10 mins walk, and quiet at night. The pool was right outside our rooms and the dining area on the first floor was very nice as was the cooked breakfast.
The rooms are modern and clean, parking is easy and secure and the manageress was a wonderful lady!

What more can i say?

Highly recommend.

Beautiful b&b just outside the centre of Hermanus. Beautiful room and the breakfast was delicious.

Friendly and good service.

Clean rooms.

Swimmingpool was a bit small.

Hermanus is a very cute village and if you go for a diner in the centre make sure you take the cliff route!

This was absolutely charming - gorgeous, clean, comfy rooms with beautiful decor. Close to the beach and town. Peaceful and happy. The best thing about this place though was the hostess/manager who runs it - Esther! She is FAB! So friendly, full of life and hospitable. Couldn't do enough to help and make us feel comfortable. I just loved her and her wonderful spirit! Stay here :-)

Whale Away Guest House has comfortable rooms and traditional african type styling. Although it is not in the town centre, the centre with its many restaurants and bars can easily be reached via the scenic cliff path. The excellent and friendly service is alway welcome after a long drive.
