“Nice Hotel, but a bit far from the town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2012

This was a nice hotel with friendly and helpful hosts. I had a double room to myself containing a double and a single bed so plenty of space for one person. I had a nice view to the side of the hotel overlooking mountains. The room was relatively basic with no hair drier and no tea and coffee making facilities but it was clean. The en-suite was a good size with a great shower. The public areas were spacious with plenty of books and games scattered around, there was also a pool table in the games room. Breakfast was good and freshly cooked. The wifi was a bit limited and did not reach much beyond the public areas. I did feel that this hotel was a bit far from the town, not an easy walk although it was close to the beach.

By far the best pub I got to in SA. Just the right size to fit the perfect crowd of 8-10. Amazing selection of beer n wine, one of the best merlot I've had (spookfontein), very much a terroir wine. The food was top notch, and I was more than stuffed. Got to chat for a whiel with the barman and the chef, both are chipper delightful fellas in their own right. Despite being a tiny pub with a heart (and hearth!) this was probably the funnest night I ended up having on vacation. Don't go to town, stay home for this beauty.

The rooms were pretty standard, with nice view of the ocean (watched whales breach from the room!). Didn't get breakfast as had to beat hell to the Sharks early next morning, but the staff had some bread n basics for us.

Room Tip: Seriously, just stay here to eat.

Our twin room was reasonable size overlooking pool. Basic but fine. No tea and coffee. Very quiet location in pretty garden. About 6 k from town but 2 mins walk to lovely beach. Hosts could not have been more helpful. Great lounge with games, books , pc, free wifi and tea and coffee. Rooms clean but felt public areas could have been a lot cleaner.

Spent a pleasant night here with nice seaviews, a balcony and a yummy breakfast. Was made to feel very welcome by the hostess Paula and recommend this place. It is a drive away from the town centre though of about 6km.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra and opt for the seaview.

We loved staying at Baleens. Nato is one of those special hosts who makes one feel at home immediately and who goes to great lengths to assist his guests. One of our party had a toothache and Nato rang around until he found a dentist who could attend to it on short notice. He could not do enough for us. The rest of the staff were just as friendly and helpful. The views from our balcony to the sea were great. We will look no further than Baleens when we visit Hermanus in the future.

We had a room with a balcony and view of the sea. The room was fairly compact and had a small bathroom but was clean and the beds were comfortable. Ameneties such as fridge and coffee making were in a communal area and there was a lounge on our floor just outside the bedroom.
The staff were very helpful and provided information for us.
Parking is on the street outside but it is fairly quiet and I had no concerns about the safety of my hire car.
Baleens is right at the end of town and its about a ten minute drive to the centre but it is well placed for Gaansbai (shark diving) and we did see some whales although due to the strong winds not as many as we had hoped.
Reception gave us good advice about the scenic drive back to cape town and suggested we see the penguins at bettys bay - a much bigger colony than at boulders!
