Description: The Cuckoo Tree was recommended by a friend. Had it not been we would not have come across it. Seating only ablout 30 people, it is an elegant and warm restaurant, run by a mother and her daughters. Lovely ambience, we noticed the others there looked like people "who know their food". An advanatage is you can take your own wine without corkage. Tastefully set tables. I would descibe the menu (dinner) as almost eclectic. Not large, but an emphasis on more unusual dishes, not the run-of-the-mill ones seen so often. We shares a double blue cheese souffle. Beautifully dopne, soft and featherlike and not too overpowering in terms of cheese. We each opted for the crispy duck - two generous portions and while crispy on the outside, the flesh was tender. Served with an orange and Van der Hum liqeur sause (the latter being a South African liqeur). it was served separately so as to prevent the duck becoming soggy. Vegertables just cooked - therefore crispy - without sugar added which is a disgusting South African habit. For dessdert we shared camembaert cigars in a rasberry coulis. Mmm. Afterwards sat out side - beautiful evening - drinking coffee and polishing off the last bit of wine. Were joined by Mum and daughters and ended up chatting for about another hour. I/we eat out a bit and travel a lot so have a pretty good idea of what is good and what is excellent. I would award 5 stars. If asked where my best dining experience was in the last year, I would have no hesitation whatsever nominating The Cuckoo Tree. Their telephone number: From outside South Africa: 00 28 3123430. From within: 028 3123430. They also serve teas, breakfast and lunch. And change the menu every now and then. Peter Francis Lakeside Cape Town South Africa

This is a really great laid back little restaurant that is set back from the shopping streets and offers a diverse and interesting menu. I had mussels which were cooked in a tasty white wine sauce which everyone else wanted to finish off for me and my husband had 'pap en vleis' which arrived in an artful stack on his plate! This is good value quality food and although there is no sea view, you really don't miss it and you can always go for a sea stroll after lunch! This is the kind of spot that the locals keep going back to and so will we.

My wife and I went to the Cuckoo Tree on the recommendation of her boss. it seats about 30 people, so is pretty intimate which gives it a warm ambience. no corkage is charged, a big bonus these days with dining out costing enough as it is. Run by a mother and her daughters and a friend, they are charming and warm hosts. The other diners were smartly dressed - unlike the riff-raff so many restaurants allow on their premises. So they were "used to something". The menu is not huge - so quality exists as opposed to quantity. I would describe it as slightly eclectic. We shares a double baked blue cheese souffle. It rose beautifully. Was soft and creamy-like on the pallet, but not over-powering. I hoped my wife would choose another dish as her mains, so I could try hers, but this was, alas, not to be. We each had the crispy duck with an orange and Van der Hum sauce (the latter being a South African liqeur). The sauce was served separately so as not too render the crispy duck soggy. Crispy skin, succulent flesh. Vegetables just done - and no sugar added (an awful South African custom). With choice of three starch. I ate slowly to make it last. Delicious? Come on! Followed by camembert cigars in a rasberry coulis. Perfect end. Joined owner and her two girls outside for expressos and jasmine tea where a further hour was spent and more juice of the vine consumed. We are not novice diners. We also travel. this was the best meal I have had out in the last 12 months. They also do breakfasts, lunch and tea. Will leave this for another day.
