“Whales with your breakfast.... how cools that?”
Reviewed 6 November 2011

Super hotel, very clean and to be able to see Whales breaching whilst you have your breakfast was something else.
The room wasn't to our taste as it was a little "chintzy" with Delft style wallpaper and could have been a bit bigger but that said the reception area, bar, breakfast room and restaurant were stylish and modern. We went during the Whale festival so the town was packed but the whole experience was great. We'd go again.

Over the Whale Festival, the population of Hermanus doubles and the town becomes a hive of activity. When you return, be sure to contact me and I will be able to match a room with your needs.
We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

We spent 3 nights in October at this lovely hotel, celebrating my wife's 30th birthday. It is an 'old' hotel; apart from the fact that it can do with a paint job on the outside, this is meant in a good way. The staff are very friendly & helpful; the rooms are really big (our bathroom was the size of most hotel rooms); the location is probably the best in Hermanus; and the list of 'back in the day' positives goes on. We had dinner at the Seafood restaurant which was well worth the visit - my wife's choice of fishcakes and salmon 'nicoise' couldn't be faulted (and she's not even really keen on seafood...). The highlight is having breakfast/ an afternoon drink and seeing what the whales get up to, all from the comfort of your chair!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea-facing room/ pay for one during the whal-watching season; get a room on the 1st (not g...

It sounds like you enjoyed the stay and hope this birthday will be remembered for years to come.
Next time, try our magnificent Seafood Platter in the Seafood at The Marine. You will not be disappointed.

The hotel is very comfortable with fantastic views of the whales during the season. The seafood restaurant is well worth a visit. More than anything we were impressed by the genuine hospitality from the friendly staff who did their utmost to attend to us and make us feel very much at home. We would certainly include The Marine in a future trip to South Africa.

Room Tip: A sea view is certainly worth it!

The Marine was built in the early 1900s and it has all the elegance of that era, plus it's extremely comfortable, has luxurious bathrooms, and friendly staff. It is worth paying for a sea view, the hotel is right on the front and you can watch the whales playing about in the sea just in front of the hotel. You just step outside and there is the wonderful cliff walk, with flowers, hyraxes and whales. Much enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Sea views are the best if you want to see whales.

Sea view rooms are definitely preferrable although all of the rooms at The Marine are comfortable and allow one to truly relax in style.
The History of the Hotel is rich in culture and forms a backbone to what Hermanus is today. A heritage we are all proud of.
I hope that you will return again soon. I am sure there will be a few familiar Dassies
(Hyrax) ready to welcome you back.

The Hotel has a great location and a wonderful seafood restaurant with delicious food and very accomodating staff. You can truly see whales from the window in your hotel room provided you are there in the season. However, unfortunately the hotel probably needs some renovation. The room which we have first been offered was not really in good shape. There was a bad smell and it made an overall impression of being slightly run down. Thanks to a very friendly and service-oriented member of staff we got an upgrade to a nice room. Staff in the hotel is generally very helpful and friendly. Apart from one waitress at breakfast who really made us feel extremely uncomfortable when we came to breakfast 10 minutes b e f o r e breakast finishes.

On behalf of The Marine, I must apologise for your experience in the breakfast room. We strive for service excellence at all times and any deviation from this is treated with the utmost urgence.
I am delighted that your upgraded room was more to your liking and your issues with your first room have been dealt with.

We hope to see you again in Hermanus soon.

We gathered for a 95th birthday lunch, and most of us stayed for 2 nights. This is a very well run and very happy hotel. The staff are always cheerful and go the extra mile to make ones stay especially comfortable.

We were staying at The Marine for 2 days and is one of the best located hotels in Hermanus for proximity to the bay and for whale spotting. Whilst we were upgraded, the sea view room was very small and the bathroom in particular quite dated. It was lovely having a terrace though. The beautifully decorated communal lounge and restaurants were very comfortable and modern, with the staff always professional, attentive and friendly. We ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel and on all occasions were of the highest quality.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms on the ground floor have a terrace, those on the frist floor (at least) do not have a...
