“wonderful Christmas eve”
Reviewed 11 March 2012

we stayed here on Xmas eve en-route to port Elizabeth, and what a gem we stayed in one of the largest rooms with a view of the bay and it was stunning.we had the set Xmas eve menu in the restaurant and it was delicious and very reasonable .
would we stay again in a flash, staff were all lovely, and could not do enough for us.
The only downside all the whales had left, maybe we will get to stay again in November.

Room Tip: ask for a sea-view

In our recent trip to South Africa, this hotel stood out as the friendliest, most elegant and best located of all the hotels we stayed in. The location, facing the sea, has the advantage of being near city center while at the same time offering the advantages of wild nature. For those of us who prefer leaving our car at a hotel and enjoying easy walking access to the sights, this was a big plus. And the fact that a walking path along the cliff is virtually at the entrance to the hotel was a joy. The staff was extremely accommodating and helpful, even going so far as to find a nurse to come visit us when one of us fell ill. The hotel offers two good restaurants, one specializing in seafood and the other a more varied (and expensive) menu. The rooms, some of which seem to be recently renovated, are done in good taste and are extremely comfortable. On balance, I can't think of anything negative about this wonderful hotel experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in a standard room, not a luxury one, and found it to be more than pleasant.

We stayed for three nights in February 2012. The service and amenities were first class and all the staff extremely friendly and helpful. The location is great and it offers all you would expect from a five star hotel of this nature. We would happily stay there again.

We were fortunate to spend a night at The Marine earlier this month and settled very easily into our beautiful accommodations, located at the front of the hotel. Our large terrace was situated above the entrance portico and afforded views of both the town and sea. With a separate living room, plenty of closet space and two full baths (!) a much longer stay was surely called for, and we look forward to our next (longer) visit.

This is a unique and historic hotel, with great style and personality. It is managed and operated by loyal, long-serving staff members whose pride in their jobs is evident and whose kindness to guests is genuine and sincere. No wonder so many guests return year after year.

Our dinner with friends in the airy Pavilion, with it's crisp black/white/grey decor, was delicious; the courses perfectly spaced. Breakfast the following morning offered an amazingly extensive cold buffet. Hot items can be ordered off the menu.

The aptly-named Sun Lounge is a great place to spend time during the day or evening. Our friends joined us here for drinks before dinnner... we returned for a pot of tea before bed... and enjoyed a last cup of coffee before departing late the following morning.

Not only is this the best place to stay and dine in Hermanus - it's one of the best places in all of South Africa.

Room Tip: Each guest room and suite at The Marine has it's own unique and carefully thought-out decor. Spe...

This hotel was fantastic. Although we were not in an ocean-facing room. We LOVED our light breezy beautifully decorated room. The bed was very comfortable, we had a huge balcony, a bathtub and shower. My husband thought the bathroom was a little out-dated but I thought it was just great. They offer a complimentary bottle of red wine with your stay which we drank throughout our 3 nights at this hotel. They also surprised us with a bottle of champagne and some colorful macaroons. We ate at Seafood for dinner one night, it was delicious but one of the more pricey dinners we ate in South Africa. I felt the perfect amount of luxury and tranquility at this property. The hotel is situated right on a cliff making whale watching something you can do anytime of the day. The staff was wonderful and polite, they were able to serve us an early breakfast in the lounge before the normal breakfast hours which was really appreciated. We would definitely return and highly recommend this hotel to other travelers.

We stayed 3 nights in this lovely hotel to celebrate my 60th birthday. The room was lovely and was greeted by such friendly staff who could not do enough for you. As a previous reviewer stated that The Pavilion restaurant's portions were very small and did not satisfy us although the food was delicious and service was amazing. The breakfast was superb. The only gripe I have was that we ordered sandwiches for lunch requesting brown bread, when they were brought to us we were told there was none available only white, this seems strange in a 5 star hotel especially as there didn't seem to be many people staying there at the time. We loved Hermanus and would definately come back to this hotel. Our thanks to all the staff who made our holiday a wonderful experience.

Dear Jillybear

I hope your 60th birthday was unforgettable and that the memories of Hermanus and The Marine will be with you for ever.
I must apologise about the incident with the brown bread mix up. A misunderstanding that has been dealt with.
I am delighted to hear that you would consider visiting us again and I look forward to welcoming you back soon.

First class hotel in excellent location overlooking the bay. Our advice for first time visitors is to ask for a tea and coffee 'station' when you arrive as these are available on request (no charge) but aren't automatically provided in each room. Also, be aware that the main restaurant (great food and service!) is closed on Sunday and Monday evenings though the fish restaurant (lively and more bistro style) is open every night.
