This is an hotel converted out of three properties into a most enchanting property. it is quaint and quirky in some ways, and yet very elegant and modern in others! The view out across Walker Bay, where the whales come so close inshore that they are just the other side of the breakers, is unbeatable!
The waves literally break against the foot of the cliff mere feet away the other side of the Cliff Path!
As I said in the title we could actually stand in our room and see the whales just off-shore!

The staff? They are sorting things out almost before you realise that there's something you want! They are by far the best aspect of this hotel! NOTHING is too much trouble.
The only thing that disappointed me was the very small range of dishes in the offered menus.
When we first arrived we were introduced to 'the chef' - the only time we actually met him - and he asked if we had any dietary preferences. My wife said she cannot eat seafood and I said that I adore fish! He said that there'd be plenty of fish dishes offered for my preferences and plenty of non-fish dishes for my wife to choose from. In fact there was only about one fish dish offered per meal and equally little to tempt my wife's palate.
Whilst there I discovered that the car hire company had given me the Rental Agreement for a totally different car to that which they'd issued me. Potentially this could have caused lots of trouble if I'd been stopped by the Police for any reason.
I ask the lady on Reception if I could phone the car hire company. Instead she spent ages talking to them on my behalf, trying to convince them that the fact that 'everything was correct' on their computer was of no help whatever if I was stopped. In the end she roped in the company that had arranged our trip and eventually everything was sorted. To that young lady - Raisa - 10 out of 10 for helpfulness.

Beautiful place. The photos on their website really are how it looks. Our room (3) had a partial ocean view and a very, very large beautiful bathroom. All of the meals were outstanding, with lunch and dinner being quite nice 3 course affairs. There was a spread of snacks in the afternoon which were also very nice. But nicest for us, we saw whales maybe 3 times from the dining area, when we were just sitting there. Awesome. Also it was an easy 30 minute drive to the cage diving with the great whites which we did one morning. Awesome.

Birkenhead is an absolute gem of a hotel. The service is beyond exceptional - the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. I booked to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday and they went out of their way to make this a special weekend. They set up a private dinner for us in their villa followed by champagne and candles awaiting us in our room. The food is exceptional and the chef will cater to any requirements you have. The views from the main balcony are just breath taking, you don't need to leave the hotel to see the whales. An absolute must for anyone looking for a 5 star experience.

Room Tip: Make sure you avoid the room right next to the dining area, it tends to be very noisy. Ask for the r...

Words are inadequate to describe all the great qualities of this unique home. We expected great things from all we had heard but we were overwhelmed by our experience, from the great location, the exceptional friendliness of the staff and the wonderful food. Unfortunately, we had only allowed 2 nights at the Birkenhead and wish we had planned for more. If the Birkenhead is only rated 5 out of 9 of the Hotels in Hermanus we cannot imagine what the others have to offer! We recommend the Birkenhead unreservedly and intend to return.

Room Tip: Request one of the ocean view rooms. The bed is a little smaller (queen size) but a small price to p...

We stayed at Birkenhead House to celebrate our anniversary and had the most fabulous time. Staff were great, efficient, friendly, welcoming and really wanted us to feel comfortable and happy. They had a great sense of humor and were great fun to chat with. The chefs were extraordinary and food was something to look forward to every single day. We had a room to die for looking out over the ocean and could see whales frolicking from our room and as we ate breakfast. We hope to go back again some day. Thank you To all staff for making our stay so memorable.

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was like being at a private spa. We relaxed by the fire in the evening and whale watched during the day. We were greeted by all the staff upon our arrival and upon leaving. The ocean views from the lounge, dining area and our room were beautiful.. As you walk out onto the main patio you are able to step onto the Oceanside path leading into town. Each meal was delightful in the small private dining area. The chef comes out to go over the menu for the day with you and will gladly pair a wine for each course at dinner. When we checked into our room we were greeted with flower pedals on the bed and in the bathroom. This is the most relaxing and beautiful hotel I have ever stayed at. The staff is like family and cannot do enough for you. You do not want to miss the opportunity to stay here is you are in Hermanus!!!!!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room with a good ocean view. Each room is unique in decoration and I suggest l...

We stayed at the Birkenhead House & Villa for only one night as we were hoping to do a shark dive. Sadly, the dive was cancelled due to bad weather....however, the Birkenhead is THE most wonderful hotel to stay at if you want a beautiful view, exceptionally helpful and friendly staff, a cosy and welcoming atmosphere and delicious food. We stayed during the winter (July 2013) and the weather was freezing, but the hotel was beautifully warm. It is a wonderful place to stay and I'm sure you will love it.

Room Tip: We had a room directly overlooking the ocean and it was wonderful, but even the rooms which are not...
