“The perfect end to a perfect holiday”

I have rarely felt compelled to fill in a Hotel review but in this instance I feel that I would like to pass on our opinion. Before arriving at Birkenhead House we had already spent 5 nights in two other boutique style hotels in Cape Town and Franshhoek, both of which were superb, so much so we feared that we would have to end our stay in SA on a low. How wrong we were! from the very minute we arrived everything was perfect ( apart from a little rain which would be tought to blame on BH ) the attention to detail and service from all members of staff was faultless, we were made to feel very special. Our room had views over both the mountains and the ocean, the bathroom was beatifully fitted and was the size of a small apartment!
the food prepared each day by the in-house chefs was perfect.
Fresh flowers filled the rooms and the hotel in general, if you are looking for somewhere special to kick back and relax completely then Birkenhead House is surely it.

We hired the whole of Birkenhead House for the first time at what was supposed to be our wedding - due to circumstances this changed into a blessing instead.
I cannot stress how fantastic this place was, nothing is too much trouble and the attention to detail is amazing, all guests were greeted with a small gift. The service was fantastic yet discreet so you never felt intruded upon. The food was also amazing and the view was to die for. We sat and watched the whales play in the bay for hours. The room are all individual and everyone who stayed as our guest felt that they each had the best room such a success were the rooms. They were all wrong because of course our room was best, room 1, not the biggest but the view was amazing - you could see all along the ocean and hear the waves crashing.
I can not highly recommend this place enough

Had just one night here in October and regretted not staying longer.

Service: just brilliant, discreet and warm, we couldn't fault it.

Food: really first class and of reasonable proportion - didn't feel like an eat-a-thon like these things can

Rooms: fabulous, unique and luxurious. There was a power cut the night we were there and they coped admirably - lanterns lit our room and the dining room, and they placed t-lights all down the stairs to our room, which made it very romantic.

Facilities: Lovely pool, amazing viewing area to watch the whales, good gym, spa treatment area, internet facility, and they washed our hire car ready for when we left.

Activities: we did the coast walk to Hermanus, which was a great way to get some much-needed exercise and see the whales. There are lots of things they can arrange for you to do, so don't be frightened of spending a few nights here, you won't get bored.

We went from here to Tsala Tree Tops, and it was a real let-down for me by comparison. This place is special and should not be missed.

The one issue I would have with them is over the description of 'sea facing' rooms. We were booked in room 6, gave us room 8 and after we complained moved us to another room, which was sea-facing. The location is such a striking one you really want to be able to see the sea. However, one guest we spoke to had a room right at the front and said the noise of the waves crashing on the cliffs kept her awake.

Just one of the best places I have been.
Service, food rooms etc fabulous.
Room1 although smaller is probably the one I would request again if I went back. Right on the ocean front.
When talking about a place like Birkenhead there is a danger that you could be seen as a sad picky individual if you are in any way negative.I feel however that if this review is to be of use I must try and be critical. ......... Nope can't think of anything. OK here are a few observations.
The hotel is in a strange location. You drive to a real "Stepford Wives" suburb of Hermanus continue down to the beachline real expensive homes and there amongst them in prime position is Birkenhead.
Second observation is the cost. It really is so much more expensive than anything else in the Cape Area but there again it is so much of a "World Class" experience. I can't imagine that the rates reflect what it costs to run the hotel but there again what do I know!!!
Last comment... Night Life. None I could fine. Best love the one your with.
