“Great sea view from the room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2013

Best location in a small town, great sea view from the room, very close to the best whales see point, nice support from the staff.
Better to ask for a front view room.
This town are very close to do a great shark diving and the staff of this hotel can provide you a best time to pick you up very early and enjoy all the diving day

Service excellence is practice here, more so than experienced anywhere else in travelling around the world. Breakfast great, views awesome, central to whales and restaurants - we left car and could walk everywhere. Child friendly, not only in facilities; but also attitude (parents of crazy toddlers will know what this means!). Rooms and hotel sparkles - it is so quaint; clean and comfortable; just really makes you feel welcome. Only downside was lack of satellite tv in the room. We shall definitely be visiting again!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea facing room - amazing view

We were thankful to get the sea view rooms at the Windsor. The hotel has an old mansion look. The rooms are comfortable with great views of the sea right across the road. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We had asked for wake up calls to go shark cage diving in the morning. When some people did not respond, the staff was more concerned than us that we would miss the trip and went to each room to wake people up.

The market square is at walking distance with great food options. We didn't have any meals at the hotel other than breakfast which had a decent spread.

Room Tip: Insist on getting a sea facing room. Its the USP of this hotel.

Dear RGtravelreviews,

Thank you for taking the time for writing such an in-depth and positive review.

We love it when people go shark cage diving and we want everybody to experience what that feeling is like so there is no way that my staff are going to let people miss their trip. I appreciate that you saw our enthusiasm on this issue.

We will use your comments to keep us motivated and we will improve upon this solid foundation.

We look forward to welcoming you back one day to The Windsor Hotel and Hermanus.

Kind regards,

Brilliant location overlooking the bay and handy for the bars and restaurants. Chose the hotel to come and do some whale watching but weather too rough for them to come inshore. Staff extremely pleasant and helpful but hotel is in desperate need of a refurb.

Dear RayL1892,

Thank you for taking the time to write down your comments and sharing it with us.

We appreciate your positive remarks and we will build on those strong foundations going into the future.

Your comments about being tired and in need of a refurb are well taken, please note that the refurb is well underway and although the "window dressing" part of it is still not seen, the behind the scenes renovation is in the final stages (Roof maintenance, water & electricity, etc).

My staff and I have been working feverishly to insure that the hotel will not only be a good looking hotel in the future, but will also be a green and as self sustainable hotel as possible. The renovations are scheduled to continue over the next two years, so we look forward to welcoming you back again and again so that you will be able to witness this change for yourself.

Kind regards,
Blake and The Windsor Team

Several years ago had stayed at Windsor Hotel and recalled the amazing seafront view. This time, we had one room for my husband and me, and a second room for my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Very good service was provided during our stay, breakfasts were really nice, and the best part were the quaint rooms which opened up to the nearby crashing surf, frolicking whales, and the beautiful view. Extremely convenient to walk to several restaurants and shops. Would definitely stay here again. Don't expect 5 star as this is not what Windsor is all about, but do expect a fab location, comfortable surroundings, interesting antiques, a small library, a pool table, and a lot of charm.

Room Tip: Sea view room is ideal!

Dear PhoebeMJoburg,

The mark of a good hotel is the impression it leaves on the traveler long after the traveler has left. For you to have such good memories of The Windsor Hotel going back several years and that these memories inspired you to come back to us again is testimony to my predecessor and the long serving staff members of our hotel and their commitment to insuring the Windsor Hotel's longevity.

What an honer it is for me and the present team to be able to add to your initial experience by again providing a service that matches the one you've had before and hopefully it will spur you on to revisit us yet again in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and thank you for your kind words.

Kind regards,

Blake and the Windsor Team

If you are expecting a new hotel you certainly will be disappointed. This is a hotel of character epitomising the best of yesteryear including good old fashioned service. Where else in the world can you sit and eat breakfast whilst watching three whales a couple of hundred metres away. The intention was to see whales and that we did. Breakfast was plentiful and would meet most people's needs. Booked through Expedia the rate was exceptional - better than that which we received for the extra night we booked but that was our choice and we should have booked the extra night on the net -we did however retain the room we were in. Staff looked after our needs very well. Would we return here rather than one of the potentially more salubrious hotels --- yes.

Dear Oldrugbyref,

Thank you most kindly for taking the time to write your review on Tripadvisor and thank you for your kind words.

My staff and I work extremely hard in order to try and get the balance between yesteryear chime and value and the needs of modern day travelers.

Your review goes a long way to encouraging us that we at very least are on the right path and we are spurred on to do even better now.

We look forward to seeing you again at The Windsor Hotel.

Kind Regards,

Irritations first. I enquired and booked telephonically for an overnight stay and ended up paying considerably more (R1,350 double sea-facing room) than rates available via the internet (R1,150) or on the in-room flyer (R1,050). The small double room allocated had a good, if slightly interrupted view, but we enjoyed a few whale sightings. Apart from that, the accommodation was clean and comfortable, but only good value at the lower price point. The lobby area lacks ambiance and more effort could be made to make guests feel welcome. Breakfast was good, with good views from the dining area. Easy parking around the back and close walking distance to restaurants and shops.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room closer to the harbour side and on the 2nd or 3rd floors.

Dear WP664,

WOW! This has to be one of the most confusing reviews I've ever answered. Technically I can answer all of your concerns, what I struggle with though is your ratings and how they collate to your statements. To illustrate my point I draw your attention to rating the location 5 stars, the sleep quality 4 stars, the cleanliness 4 stars, you then relate two stars to the room and one star to the service? And yet at no point in your review did you indicate that there was any issue with service, how can I improve if you don't tell me what it is that I need to know?

As for your points, we have a structure of rates as per every hotel in the world. Those rates go to different areas of the market, such as (R1050) a loyalty rate for returning guests, (R1150) is the stimulation to go online rate, and then of course your best available rate which fluctuates according to demand as per the airlines. This is a very simple rate structure used by many industries.

Mr WP664, we don't have huge rooms, these are the rooms we have. As you say you had a clean comfortable sea facing room where you got to witness fantastic sites. What more could one want from your stay in Hermanus?
As for our lobby, we have a free welcoming drink, offer free Wi-Fi, have ample seating with the most spectacular views of Walker Bay. We have pictures showing our history going back a 117 years, we have information available about the area such as shark cage diving, whale watching tripsetc. we have a computer readily available to our guests to investigate anything they would want to know about the area.
Please would you be so kind as to drop me an e-mail (blake@windsorhotel.co.za) as to what you would perceive to be the best atmosphere and welcoming that I could possibly create here at the Windsor. I mean this with all sincerity.

Your statement about the breakfast being good, good views from the dining area, easy parking, close walking distance to restaurants and shops are all valid. Why 2 stars? This rates us as poor.

As far as value is concerned, I will challenge you Mr WP664 to find me full sea-view accommodation in Hermanus in a Hotel, B&B or Guesthouse of Like comparison at a better rate than me and I will pay for your weekend at that establishment (Must be their rack rate).

My staff have urged me to ask you to come back, they want to prove to you that they are much better than your perception. Again please contact me to arrange details.

Kind regards,

Blake and the Windsor Team.
