“African bliss”
Reviewed 28 January 2013 via mobile

This was my third trip to Schulphoek and each trip offers a unique experience.
Upon entry you are greeted by a truly relaxed African ambience. The courtyard leads to the main building with rooms on one side and a swimming pool on the other.
The rooms are clean and spacious with everything one needs for a break.
The communal living and dining room always encourages conversation between strangers whilst providing a splendid view over the ocean. The kitchen is spectacular.
The menu changes constantly and the food is great with most fresh produce being grown in the giant vegetable and herb garden on site. The staff are also very friendly.

I am a big fan of Schulphoek and its offerings and can strongly recommend it to anyone traveling close to Hermanus.

We stayed here in November and came away feeling mostly disappointed with the value for money of Schuphoek. The positives - we had a very nice welcome and a pleasant supper on the first evening, so no complaints there.

But the room (Oyster) was quite a disappointment. A major factor in this is the lack of natural light, for there aren't really any windows in the room - apart from the glass main door which opens out onto the guesthouse courtyard. The rooms felt slightly tired and for 5 star not everything was there that you might expect - there was no firewood and it was tricky to track some down and the decor feels a little bit dated. The layout of the room too is a little bizarre in places, pictures at strange heights, couches not set up in a way that encourages relaxation. The bathroom had no curtains so whilst the room was dingy and dark during the day, the light streamed in in the morning and disturbed our sleep.

Overall, we felt Schulphoek was overpriced and that if you don't have a sea view the room doesn't really feel like somewhere you would like to relax and chill out - more of a place for sleeping only. We always found the room depressing and wanted to get out and about - which happily Hermanus is a lovely place to get out and about.

We felt the place was more 4 star than 5 - and we felt we had stayed in guesthouses that were better value for money, with perhaps less showy rooms but at least rooms which had natural light and a view.

When we arrived at Schulphoek for the umpteenth time last Spring, I said to Petro: " I call the security gate The Pearly Gate because once we pass through it we are in heaven on earth!"

Each time we have stayed at Schulphoek, it has been quite wonderful. Petro and Mannes are just the perfect hosts. The accommodation is 5 star and the food sublime, enhanced by the communal table hosted by Petro whilst Mannes cooks.

We just love the place like a second home and will return as soon as we can.

My wife and I traveled to South Africa with my parents (aged around 70 plus) and my kids (aged 7 and 9), and was advised to stay at this property by some friends. Initially I was reluctant as I wanted to spend more/all my time in Cape Town but I finally gave in. That decision paid off as by far this was the best part of our trip to South Africa!!

Arriving at this hidden treasure (literally!!) is very easy when using the perfect GPS coordinates which are strongly recommended if one is driving there. The warm welcome and very casual check in at the guesthouse with the wonderful hosts Petra and Mannes is the start of a most magical stay.

The rooms are just amazing and we were fortunate to have two large rooms/suites which are very charmingly finished with all modern conveniences well provided for. The guesthouse's common area and lounge are the most breathtaking sight any traveler can ever hope for. Expansive uninterrupted views of blue blue ocean literally make you wish for your stay to never end. The meals which are prepared by the host himself are a most fantastic culinary experience which is thoroughly recommended. The location allows for short trips to Hermanus, whale watching, shark viewing, penguins at Betty's Bay and many many other activities which are not usual run-of-the-mill touristy stuff.

The place is simple yet cozy, warm and homely. Its simplicity is I guess its winning factor and the hosts are just wonderful, sincere people. I would certainly go back to Hermanus and without a doubt visit my friends Petra and Mannes again. Thoroughly recommended and guaranteed brilliant experience!

Room Tip: Oyster suite is amazing!

This is a wonderful guesthouse, we couldn't fault it. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we were looked after superbly. The rooms were lovely and so clean. We ate here on both evenings and the food and wine, which we chose from the wine cellar, was excellent. Amazing sunsets.

My husband and I stayed at Schulphoek Guesthouse in late November for 2 nights. The experience was wonderful we were greeted by Petro with the warmest and friendliest greeting, I ever experienced. Eating dinner with the other guests is a must! I was reluctant to eat with the rest of the guests but I HIGHLY recommend you do this! Petro strategically seated us by couples who she thought we'd enjoy. Of course we had a lovely dinner conversation along with the most delicious meal.

The room was perfect. Bed was comfortable, room was quiet and the bathroom was spacious. I would love to return to Schulphoek again and highly recommend it. Oh, she guided us to wonderful places to hike, run, see the whales, etc.

We stayed here for two nights at the end of our honeymoon. We were warmly welcomed by one of the owners Petro who we found to be most helpful (gave us lots of tips on things to do and let us have a late check out). Although the guesthouse is 3km from Hermanus, it has beautiful views and a great place to watch the whales from. Because of its location, you are less lightly to eat out in the evenings but this is compensated for by the fact that Petro and her husband offer a delightful evening meal each evening for all of their guests. The food was delicious. You also get to pick your own bottle of wine from their extensive range which is good fun. You can dine at the same table as the other guests which is a lovely way of hearing about other peoples experiences of their travels. Although except for one of the rooms, there is no views of the ocean, the rooms are spacious and very well finished. Petro and Mannes are great hosts and provided you don't mind staying 3km outside Hermanus this guesthouse is a very good option.
