“Seaside cottage- fantastic sea side position and great service.”
Reviewed 23 July 2013 via mobile

We were 5 adults and we stayed in the seaside cottage. It was perfect for what we wanted. Fantastic views on the sea. 3 big bedrooms each with their own bathroom, a lounge / dining room and kitchen so easy to self cater. A great covered area out the front looking over the sea with a fire place. Every evening we came home to a fire already lit for us outside. We spent the evenings talking around the fire ( and cooked veggies on it one night) under a starry sky. The service was great and we were really well looked after. I can't recommend this place highly enough'

Thank you for your very kind comments regarding your stay in the Crayfish self-catering cottage. We are delighted that you enjoyed the views and your stay.!
We hope you would visit again in the future, perhaps during whale watching time...?

First of all, this space is lovingly designed - I believe the owner herself personally did each room, and it shows.

But beyond that, the two caretakers, Mannes and Petro, are what makes the experience so special for the guests. They are wonderful - and wonderfully attentive - hosts.

They are also superheroes, considering they are somehow able to entertain guests until the early hours of the morning and then wake up with the sun to attend to all the staff, planning menus, meeting the special wishes and needs of each guest, etc.

I think of my time there every day, and I long to go back. Unforgettable

This is a Guest House with the most fantastic views over the bay. The Husband cooks, and provides food as good as any mitchelin starred restaurant. The food is then served and unless you would rather not, all the guests sit on one table, with the Hostess, and eat the meal. I found this great, as it gave us chance to chat with all the other guest. The owners put themselves out to make sure you got the most out of the area. I wanted to go fishing, and the owner took me to the local boat club as they were having a fishing competition the following morning. Unfortunately it was too windy, but not many Guest House owners would have put themselves out to that extent. There are some lovely walks along the coast, but it is risky to walk there after dark.

Room Tip: Only one room has sea views. But the views from the guest lounge / breakfast area are fabulous.

I visited Schulphoek Guesthouse for one night, while exploring Hermanus and surrounds. I came with 3 friends, and we had an incredible experience. Our hosts Petro and Mannes were warm and welcoming, and ensured we were comfortable at all times. The rooms were exquisite, with each room having its own design and unique features. Although we didnt have the rooms overlooking the sea, our rooms were perfectly situated alongside the other rooms, in the courtyard with beautiful trees and bridlife to add to the experience.

Dinner was outstanding! You have dinner at a large table with the other guests, which is ideal when socialising and meeting new people. Mannes helped us choose our wine for the evening, and contined to check up on us throughout the night. Petro was extremely helpful, ensuring we always were comfortable and making our experience even better. The starter was divine and the main meal was a perfectly cooked peice of fish, Mannes is an amazing chef, with outstanding skills...and the dessert which followed was SUPERB! With the meal area located in the main house, overlooking the sea, the evening was perfect, as the sun went down and we enjoyed the company of our friends. Breakfast was delicious, with the sun pouring into the lounge/eating area while we had our morning coffee.

There is a beautiful garden, as well as pool and pool house which adds to Schulpoek's character.

I would certainly go back, and this time for much longer! It was the best experience I have had in Hermanus, and a trip I will never forget.

We only spent two nights here and wish we had booked for longer. We were in the Scallop room which has stunning views over the sea. The room was large, with a very comfortable bed. We had a big spa bath and a very large walk in shower, double basins. The whole suite was tastefully decorated. The hosts, Petro and Mannes were very welcoming and friendly. All guests have dinner together at a large table in the lounge/dining area. We were alone the first night but had two other couples with us for dinner for the second evening. It was a very enjoyable evening swapping travel experiences. Mannes was the chef for the evening dinners and they were superb. Petro helped us to chose wine from their cellar which has a very good stock. Breakfast was very good too.

There is a good sized pool in the garden with loungers and umbrellas. A path used by walkers runs in front of the guesthouse, good for a morning/evening walk to watch the waves and the plentiful bird life.

A friend recommended this guesthouse to us and we were not disappointed.

Room Tip: The Scallop room is sea facing.

This was my third trip to Schulphoek and each trip offers a unique experience.
Upon entry you are greeted by a truly relaxed African ambience. The courtyard leads to the main building with rooms on one side and a swimming pool on the other.
The rooms are clean and spacious with everything one needs for a break.
The communal living and dining room always encourages conversation between strangers whilst providing a splendid view over the ocean. The kitchen is spectacular.
The menu changes constantly and the food is great with most fresh produce being grown in the giant vegetable and herb garden on site. The staff are also very friendly.

I am a big fan of Schulphoek and its offerings and can strongly recommend it to anyone traveling close to Hermanus.

We stayed here in November and came away feeling mostly disappointed with the value for money of Schuphoek. The positives - we had a very nice welcome and a pleasant supper on the first evening, so no complaints there.

But the room (Oyster) was quite a disappointment. A major factor in this is the lack of natural light, for there aren't really any windows in the room - apart from the glass main door which opens out onto the guesthouse courtyard. The rooms felt slightly tired and for 5 star not everything was there that you might expect - there was no firewood and it was tricky to track some down and the decor feels a little bit dated. The layout of the room too is a little bizarre in places, pictures at strange heights, couches not set up in a way that encourages relaxation. The bathroom had no curtains so whilst the room was dingy and dark during the day, the light streamed in in the morning and disturbed our sleep.

Overall, we felt Schulphoek was overpriced and that if you don't have a sea view the room doesn't really feel like somewhere you would like to relax and chill out - more of a place for sleeping only. We always found the room depressing and wanted to get out and about - which happily Hermanus is a lovely place to get out and about.

We felt the place was more 4 star than 5 - and we felt we had stayed in guesthouses that were better value for money, with perhaps less showy rooms but at least rooms which had natural light and a view.
