“A Great Find”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2007

We stayed here for 1 night in September during the whale festival. We had booked the honeymoon suite and were pleasantly surprised by the hotels great location and view from the bedroom. We could easily have stayed here for longer and would happily recommend this to anyone looking for accommodation in Hermanus.

On the downside, our room had dark furnishings which some people may like.

There is a great restaurant on the roof with splendid sea views.

Stayed one night at Misty Waves so we could see the Whales. Easy 2 block walk to the center of town. Nice views and the Whales performed as advertised. Our last night in SA sitting on the 2nd floor deck of a little pub viewing the Whales with binoculars, drinks and a long lens camera. Very Nice. Easy walk back along the shore. All appeared completly safe. Nice rooms although the tv could not be seen in it's cabinet unless you stood directly in front. We got caught up in the Rugby playoffs and wanted to watch the Springbok. Breakfast was very good. Staff was ready and willing to help. Also, a very easy drive to the Airport.
One note: The directions (map) printed from the hotel web-site were drawn up by a kindergartner. Impossible to follow. Had to ask help of a kindly "car guard" to set me straight.

Hotel is set back and is more squashed in that the photo suggests.. We had the Victorian Room which was in a building at the front of the hotel that you cant see on the photo.. Stunning room with a 4 poster bed, it was a bit chilly and needed the electric heater blowing all night to stay warm.. However lovely place for a stop over to see the whales!! You only need 1 day in Hermanus..

A beautiful property but the pictures are misleading as the hotel is set back from the road and there is not a clear view of the beach. It is not on the beach but accross the road.
The rooms are beautifully furnished and appointed.
When we arrived, we were told that we had to pay the whole bill on checking in even though we had paid a 50% deposit. We then requested a heater as it was freezing. There were no heaters left but they wanted a payment of R100.00 for the remote control for the airconditioner - not as a deposit but as a charge for the electricity! When we requested a kettle for the room, they said that they charged R25.00/day. We were taken aback by the unfriendliness of the receptionist. Things did get better but our wariness stayed with us throuout our stay.
The breakfast was very nice and pleasantly served.

We have just returned from a two week stay at The Misty Waves hotel and were extremely impressed by all aspects of it.. On our arrival as we had booked for two weeks we were 'upgraded' from the room we had booked to a lovely room in the hotel annex with a fantastic balcony overlooking the sea. All the staff were very friendly without being over bearing and nothing was too much trouble. Service was always prompt, the rooms kept very clean, and when we arrived due to work being done on nearby street we had no hot water, the staff boiled a number of urns of water and bought them to our room which after a long journey was very welcome. The location of the hotel is ideal for walking to Gearings Point to watch whales (in season) and into town.
We went for my Birthday and booked the roof top jacuzzi, when we went there were rose petals, candles and a bottleof sparkling wine - not a bad way to spend a birthday.
The owner and his son Dillon were particularly helpful with other business we had in Hermanus and went out of their way to assist us.
We would recommend this hotel and will certainly be returning.

This was the only example of poor quality accomodation we had during our trip to South Africa. My booking was for a Heritage Luxury Suite and we were taken to Room 302 in an out-building/cottage at the side of the pool.Inside Room 302 was definitely not luxury and had poor decor and furnishings.
The door to 302 is a French Window ,all glass and for privacy the curtains need to be drawn. The bedroom has 2 sash windows at ground level and they look directly onto a veranda belonging to another suite and so again the curtains need to be drawn. This veranda has direct access to the street. The sash cords in both windows were broken and the locking mechanism on one of the windows did not work. For safety and security this is not acceptable and I fixed the faulty lock on the window. While working on the window I found that a section of the floor in the corner of the bedroom went up and down as you walked along. The plaster in the bathroom was stained (by damp?) and on the right as you entered the suite the wall was covered with plywood up to about 1.8m presumably to cover more plaster problems. There is a hole cut in the plywood allowing access to the light switch. In the bathroom there was a circular basin mounted in an old wooden stand which was badly water stained caused by the hot water tap being loose and swivelling round. We went up to the main hotel building and complained to the staff and their reply was a) It is an old building and b)Hermanus is very safe and you dont need to worry about security here.(I later discovered that there is a security guard with German Shepherd on duty at night ).As we were about to go into Hermanus for dinner we discovered that the safe did not work and when we returned the portable air fan was not working. My wife went up to reception and Dillon Lerm (The Lerm family own the hotel) was extremely rude to her saying "You are the first to complain about this room and if you are not happy take your cases and go somewhere else etc" .However the fan problem was fixed and we went to bed.We then discovered that there is accomodation above 302 and their floorboards are our ceiling There is no sound insulation and in 302 you can hear everything happening above especially when the occupants get up at 05.30 and start moving the furniture around.
Room 302 is definitely not a Luxury Suite but more like self-catering standard. The furniture, the fittings, and the decor are not luxurious. It is not air conditioned and the state of maintenance is poor. The hotel's web site is very vague and is non specific about it's accomodation -is it in the hotel,or the annexe,or in this cottage This was my only poor experience in South Africa.

Left the UK when it was cold and windy and arrived in Hermanus to be welcomed by warm sunshine. Hotel was very welcoming and we stayed 14 nights as planned. Room was in the heritage cottage which had all we needed including a view of the sea from the lounge area. Room was cleaned to a high standard every day with bed being turned down in the evening. Staff were very cordial and helpful when needed. Breakfast was served to a good standard and we ate a couple of times in the restaurant which was good but from limited range of menu. However they do have to compete with the excellent range of restaurants in Hermanus itself all which we enjoyed. Hermanus is a good location for being able to visit places both east and west from the town. If you are prepared to drive Cape Town, Cape Agullas, wine lodges, Stellenbosch and Franshoek are all within reasonable driving distances.
Would have liked to have seen more sun parasols in garden as there were only three and proved not enough for guests staying there.
Hotel is in great location with only a short walk into town.
