“Luxurious B&B, great hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2012

On an 18-day self-drive birdwatching trip around Western & Northern Cape, this was one of the very best B&Bs. Views from the terrace down towards the bay are superb (whales seen distantly from the bedroom!); breakfast was delicious; our room was large, spotlessly clean and well-equipped; and Mary and Jean's hospitality was superb. They welcomed us with tea and cake, and went on to book our dinner reservation in town for us!

For birdwatchers, various fynbos species (including sugarbirds) visit bird feeders in the garden, further adding to the appeal.

Thank you David for taking the trouble to write this review - I wish you had both been here yesterday! For the second time in the six years that we have lived up here, I saw a pair of hoopoes pecking unconcernedly on the grass just below FrancolinHof. They are spectacular birds and it was a real treat to watch them getting on with life.

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay here and I hope that we will meet again.

Our best wishes to you both
Mary

We had a wonderful 3 nights staying with Mary and Jean, FrancolinHof really sits where the mountains meet the sea and our room had views of both. We were welcomed with a lovely pot of tea and a slice of cake and the weather was good enough to allow us to sit on the balcony where whales could be seen in the bay. Mary had excellent advice on places to eat and sights to visit, we also enjoyed a walk up the mountain and a walk along the coastal path into Hermanus where we viewed more whales than we could count. FranclinHof is a very comfortable place to stay, all staff are excellent and both Mary and Jean work hard to ensure your stay is special.

Thank you for your lovely review - we do appreciate it. Tenji and Fezeka are thrilled when their contribution is recognised by our guests ! The whales have been very active over the past few days, and once again there is an albino baby in the bay. Yesterday Jean and I walked along the cliffs and a short walk took rather long because we kept stopping to watch the whales!

Take care and our best wishes as you start getting shorter days.

What a fantastic guest house Mary and Jean have in hermanus. we spent 2 wonderful nights in their luxurious home. The views from our terrace were stunning! We had a birds eye view over Hermanus. It is a few mintues drive from the beautiful cliff walk and Grotto beach. It is truly heaven on earth! The service was outstanding. Mary and Jean made us feel right at home. We would highly recommend Francolinhof as a great base to anyone planning on staying in Hermanus. With the sea on one side and mountains filled with Fynbos and exciting hiking trails on the other francolinhof is a real oasis of calm and the perfect place to stay. we loved it and it was one of the highlights of our holiday in south africa. Thanks Mary, Jean and all the staff in Francolinhof!

Francolinhof is a little way out of town but we had a car so it was no problem at all and it is very close to the start of the coastal nature trail where you can spot whales.

The rooms are lovely and there are great little added extras like a glass of port when you get back from your evening out. The owners are friendly and give great advice on where to eat and what to do.

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review for us - we do appreciate your feedback and are pleased that you enjoyed the little extras.

There is a lot to do in Hermanus and I'm glad you found our suggestions helpful.

All the best and I hope you will one day return to do some of the other things that are not possible to fit in to a short stay!

We booked this lodge last minute, called up the owners (so sorry can't remember names) and they secured the booking straight away, didn't even require a deposit. We arrived the next day, the lodge is on the edge of town, up an avenue right at the end. WHAT A LOCATION!!! Mountains in the garden and we had an awesome balcony overlooking the ocean, I was watching wales breaching from the balcony, unforgettable. We had a new room, The Francolin Room, massive room, massive bed, great bathroom - everything was fantastic. As with most guest houses in SOuth Africa, the breakfast was fantastic, the honesty bar was cheap and the staff fantastic. If you are looking for a quiet lodge with fantastic views thats only a very short Tuk Tuk ride to town then stay here!

Room Tip: Francolin room!

Hello Kelly

We spent 2 fantastic nights at the FrancolinHof this August. The place is great, right in the middle of nature, with a wonderful view of the mountains and the sea, and whales can definitely be seen from the balcony of your room: what a great thing to see when one wakes up! The rooms are large and very combortable and pleasant, very quiet and they all have a wifi connection. We also loved the breakfast and the warm hospitality of our hosts. They also recommended a great restaurant in town were we had 3 out of 4 meals! We could enjoy an unfortunately too short walk from the house in the surrounding mountains and it was brilliant. The only thing is that we couldn't stay enough to enjoy fully...
To be recommended, definitely!

Dear Chloe and Bobby, what wonderful review, thank you so much.

Next time you stay longer and then you can walk up to the beacon! And all long the cliffs - and Grotto and ... It was very good to meet another couple from Mauritius and I hope that we will one day visit your most beautiful island where our daughter and son-in-law had their honeymoon.

Take care
