What can one say, while it is not Fancourt, its not trying to be though. The golf course and condition is 1st class, the layout will never bore you. The halway house is nothing you will ever encounter in the UK. The views in my opinion are up with the best you will ever have the pleasure of seing, the 2nd tee is out of this world.

The hotel is not 5 star, but 4 1/2 star, the staff are wonderfull, the rooms are very comfortable with stunning views too, very well equipped.

The food was right up there with the best we found in ZA, enjoyed it more then 'whites' at Fancourt. The views from Breakfast, because of daylight, are again up there with the best in the world. The wonderfull helpfull Michelle even arranged a champagne breakfast for my 50th b'day, thank you.

For a group of guys looking for a couple days golfing break then i can not recommend this more highly!! If it was not for the fact that there are some other great courses around this area then longer then two nights is also recommended. We will be back.

Room Tip: Try and upgrade, so that you have a living room as well. This will make your stay even more special.

Simola Hotel is one of the finest establishments I have ever seen. The golf course is a world class and the hotel facilities are simply superb. The spacious self-catering apartments perched above the hills with the most magnificent mountain/lagoon views, are well maintained, immaculately serviced and beautifully decorated. The attention to detail is noticeable everywhere - from the perfectly manicured landscaping, the sumptuous towels in the spa, the perfectly designed sauna room.... to the top quality of the cutlery in the kitchen drawers!

The outdoor pool area is very cosy and well appointed with a breathtaking view of the Knysna Lagoon. The indoor pool is equally nice with a wraparound view of lush greenery.

The hotel staff was unobtrusive and always available and attended to all our requests promptly.

Fantastic experience.

We had booked a package incl. golf on the Simola golf course for 4 nights.
Welcome/check-in: Welcome was with a glass of sparkling wine, check-in took a bit longer than expected, overall 4*.
Rooms: we were first given a normal double room which is absolutely not recommendable: very small (we could only place one of two suitcases), only one hanger in the much too small wardrobe, very small shower cabin, noisy a/c. Standard rooms would receive 3*, which is way too few for a 5* hotel. We could book un upgrade at ZAR 750 per night to a suite which provided a large living room with refrigerator, kitchen etc. plus a large bathroom and a wonderful terrace with fireplace and beautiful panorama views. The terrace was at night inhabited by pigeons which left their droppings everywhere. The wooden bar under the terrace roof was covered with a 5cm thick layer of bird's dung (--) Laundry put outside to dry was almost sure to attract bird's dung ... Overall room standard4+*, cleanliness: 2*.
Restaurant: buffets in the evening (seafood, French, Asian, seafood) were absolutely top notch: good starters, a wide range of well prepared main courses, very good deserts. Breakfast: vast selection of breakfast items, very good quality - everything 5*, except for the coffee (3*).
Golf: one of the most challenging golf courses around as almost all greens and landing zones are protected by bunkers, supported by undulating fairways. Greens are difficult to read. There are no easy shots at Simola.
As the distance between holes is often very long and height differences as we'll it is strongly advisable to use a cart.
As we were only guests we had to tee off 4 times from the 10th tee as the first tee was reserved for members. This was a bit of a disappointment as it had not been announced upfront and we would have liked to play the real round at least once. The driving range was closed during the whole stay.
Overall: golf course: 5*, golf experience: 3-4*

Dear Reviewer,

Many thanks for taking the time to review your recent stay at Simola Hotel & Spa. We welcome the feed back received from travellers far and wide, and take each on its own merit.

Our apologies for any delay experienced with your check in.

Our smaller rooms are designed for family travel - but with the demand for space, we do offer them for individual booking at a much reduced rate. There is little comparison to the luxurious suite which offers much more space & comfort. Whilst we have attached plastic spike to deter the naturally prevelant pidgeons, they do still seem reluctant to avoid our balconies. This is something we are trying to humanly address, and will hopefully have succeeded in doing so by the time you visit us again.

We are very proud of our 5* chef and restaurant, and equally pleased that you enjoyed our table. We strive to cater to all tastes and cultures, and have receive many worthy reviews of same.

You are not the first to state that "there are no easy shots at Simola" - our course is indeed challenging, we trust you will be able to return and play the entire course, which I appreciate was indisposed to you during your stay.

We thank you again for your input and comments which enable us to continue to grow and improve our overall service and hospitality experience.

Kind regards
Michelle Hammond

Dear Reviewer,

Many thanks for taking the time to review your recent stay at Simola. We welcome our guests comments and reviews, and are constantly striving to make necessary improvements.

We are reviewing the necessity to order additional pool loungers and cabana umbrellas. Our restaurant receives many awards and reviews as one of the best in the Garden Route, we are sorry that the table was not to your palate.

Whilst our amenities are larger volume than the normal 5 star standard, we do appreciate that those staying for a longer period may indeed require additional supplies. For this reason, the amenities are readily replenished daily at no charge to the guest.

As per the star grading council, out linen is changed on the third night of stay. Having said this, we are very willing to change daily upon request.

Kind regards
Michelle Hammond

On checkin a higher rate than quoted was mentioned. The correspondence was then checked and this error rectified. We took lunch at the lounge/patio while waiting for our rooms. The spectacular view was offset by the filthy table, dirty floors and slow service. Our rooms were a similar size to a cruise ship cabin and the toilet/shower as small. Rooms were car park facing. The indoor spa pool was un serviced, on both days there were no towels and no fresh glasses nor water jugs, just a mess from previous guests. The small pool deck is perched above the golf course with vistas to the Knysna Heads, lagoon and islands. Unfortunately there were insufficient pool beds and bar service was extremely slow. I chatted to the food and beverage manager and he apologized and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine. What a pity that such a beautiful resort appears to be so poorly managed.

Room Tip: Golf course facing. Ask how big it is.

I was very disappointed with an incident at the Simola Hotel. On a cloudy and windy day, the receptionist personally ushered us into the hotel spa indoor pool on account of the weather making it impossible to swim outside. Apparently she checked with spa personnel who agreed that children could swim there because of the dismal weather. Once inside and after I had allowed my children to go into the pool, spa staff unceremoniously and rudely informed me that no under 16's were allowed in the area. I obviously would not have assumed that children were allowed without the assertion of the hotel receptionist who personally escorted my children and I inside. With no other signage prohibiting children, I took it at her word that it would be okay. Although she apologized, I was deeply offended by the discourteous manner in which the spa staff conducted themselves. And the lack of basic communication amongst hotel staff which resulted in this level of discordance.

Dear Reviewer,

Many thanks for taking the time to write about your Simola Experience. I do apologize for the manner in which your family were dealt with in the Spa. This is something that I will look into and take the necessary steps to rectify. As a rule we do not allow children into the Still Room, as it is obviously meant for patrons to relax in after one of the many treatments on offer.

I trust that the rest of your Simola Experience was a pleasant one, and that we may see you with us again in the future.

Many thanks,
Kind regards
Michelle
