“shocking, unfriendly and dirty”
Reviewed 11 February 2013

what a terrible experiencs. my husband and i got married on 9th feb 2013 and we booked 2 nights stay at thia guesthouse in early jan this year. i spoke to i think thd owner, Ian and when i explained that thix is our honeymoon he suggested the honeymoon suite.
the pictures online were lovely and so we booked.

we then arrived yesterday to book in, daniel who answered ths phone was so unfriendly wheni asked for difections when we were in naturesvalley. not an easy place to find.
a
we arrived and the owners were not thefe to greet us, a guy in dirtyold tracksuit pants, old stretchec jersey and flip flops asked our name and then just told us ghat breakfast is at 8 showed us a table and then took us upstairs to where thehoneymoon suite is.

up some stairsand was just a shock to us! dirty, old and looked like something from a 2nd hand 70's store. there was bo privacy at all, a large windos by bed and looked out on lower area where people wers and looked like no curtains.
the bath was dirty and all just looked run down and horrid we could not stay there.

sadly we have lost R750 but will try anc reach the ownerwhen we can.
we had to go and find other accomodation and pay for it.

not a great way to start our honeymoon.

Ian and Pat Bond, owner/managers’ sincerely apologise for not being able to personally welcome Gayner and her husband to Natures Valley Guest House.
It was a rainy, windy weekend when our son Daniel took them up the wooden stairs to their thatched roofed room, which is surrounded by a thick hedge of trees; the windows have blinds, which were up and the curtains on the sliding doors which lead to a private deck, were tied back. Privacy is assured by a completely separate entrance. The room is furnished in “retro ‘70s” to maintain our thatch-cottage look, which is very obvious from the pictures on our website, which they had seen.
It was a surprise to Daniel when they told him that they had just received an urgent call from Cape Town and had to rush back. He assured them that they did not have to pay in anything and wished them well. So it was a devastating shock to read this review, when they had not mentioned any of their grievances to him.
We have had many returnee guests with happy memories of their stay in that room. The very next guests were from England celebrating their 55th anniversary with a shared bath in the romantic bathroom.
It is a pity that Gayner and husband could not have been honest and aired their views to management at the time so that their complaints could have been dealt with immediately.
We would like to point out that our guesthouse is not in Knysna, but in Nature's Valley itself, known for its unique, peaceful charm, especially on a beautiful day.

My boyfriend and I completed the 5 day Otter trail hike and had a fabulous time, scenery beautiful and highly recommended. We were hiking with a group of 11 people and there was a group booking at Natures Valley for the night we came off the hike. We walked into Natures Valley and spent over an hour walking around town trying to find the accommodation (in the rain), it only has a sign in front of the establishment and another coming into town along the road, ie nothing for hikers coming off the Otter trail walking along the beach.

The reception we received was surly at best from the male owner, his wife was pleasant and helpful. I got the feeling that the wife wants to run the B&B and the husband is clearly not enthusiastic with guests requests. We needed medical treatment for my 5 day old spider bite and were told by the male owner "...it was too bad we didn't have a car" as the closest doctor was 20 mins drive in Plettenberg Bay. We were travelling by plane and had arranged a pick up the next day but I needed urgent treatment for my swelling and painful bite.

To my horror we had to plead with the male owner to obtain a lift to Plettenberg Bay, we paid R500 for the room (which we didn't use as we didn't know how long the medical appointment would take, so we booked a further room in Plettenberg Bay having no transport to return to Natures Valley) and then a further R200 for the lift from the owners to get to Plettenberg Bay. We paid R700 in total and didn't stay there. Not exactly what we expected from a B&B which obtained some of its business from hikers coming off the Otter trail hike year round. The wife should keep her husband clear of the guests and be more accommodating when medical assistance is requested. Personally I would drive any of my guests when medical assistance is clearly required.

Myself and my hiking group stayed at this guesthouse after our 5day Hike.

The guesthouse is well equipped, comfortable and had lots of rooms for us all. And after the 5day hike, this was exactly what we wanted.

We did however hit a snag when it came to sleeping time. Sorry to say the bedding was not very clean. i.e a few blood spots. We complained to the owner, but didnt get a good response. At first he just wanted to flip the bedding over, but later brought us a change of bedding. The next day we heard that Fellow hikers who also stayed at the guesthouse was also not pleased. i.e live ticks in the beds.

I cannot speak for my fellow hiker friends, but my experience at this guesthouse was not as pleasant i would have hoped.
I am sure though that there are many pleasant guesthouses in and around the Nature's Valley area and would definitely like to visit the Knysna area in future.
