On a garden route trip a visit to the knysna heads is a must, day or evening. Parking can be difficult but it is worth waiting. There are great rock pools for children to explore when the tide is out. A decent bar and coffee shop are there to enjoy.

When in Knysna, one has to visit the heads. You can explore the rock pools and collect sea-glass from the small beach. There are two restaurants. The East Head cafe is one of the best in Knysna, open for breakfast and lunch only. The best view in Knysna. You can also visit the Viewpoint, higher up on the heads for a spectacular look at the whole of Knysna.

Dramatic cliffs guard a narrow entrance to the very beautiful Knysna Estuary with majestic mountains in the background

The Knysna Heads are stunning. Be sure to not only do the WHOLE cliffs walk on the north head as there are about 5 or 6 good lookout points, but to also do the walk at sea level. Parking is available at both sites and there are also picnic spots with tables and BBQs (braais) at the sea level.

The rock formations are like a frame holding a picture of the ocean in place. Went on a Saturday in May around lunch time and parking was a bit of on an issue but Donaven, the car guard, handled the traffic pretty well. I recommend you park at the top of the road, next to the traffic circle and rather walk down. Once you're at the viewing point, you're literally going to sit and stare at the view (for free). You can also maybe grab a meal at one of the 2 restaurants there.
