The location is excellent. The rooms are large and well appointed. However the rest of the hotel is nothing special. . No luches or dinners are served at the hotel (althought there are restaurants nearby) there is no bar fridge. The hotel has more of a motel feel. I dont feel it deserves a 4 star rateing and personaly would rate it as a three star. At a 4 star price range you could probaly do better.

A very nice holiday inn- type hotel on the knysna waterfront. Would have preferred going for one of the millions of bed and breakfasts in and around knysna. However, it was clean, and they gave us a free upgrade to a lagoon facing room with a bottle of champaigne (we were on our honeymoon). There is a great breakfast place 2 blocks away called mon petit pain – well worth skipping the included hotel breakfast. (I ended up having a second breakfast after eating the fairly good included hotel breakfast)

We stayed in October 2009 in two rooms side by side. I was a little disappointed we could not get interconnecting rooms but this wasn't a massive issue. The location is great with the waterfront restaurants a very short walk away. The pool was great. Staff were very friendly and helpful. It's a basic no frills motel but it's comfortable.

Ok so the location is ideal and the views over the lagoon are very nice if you pay a little extra for the lagoon facing rooms. The rooms themselves are pretty small, its probably inbetween a 3 or 4 star hotel. There were no issues as such its just a very average hotel, nothing stands out. Having stayed at the Table Bay in Cape Town and then the Lanzarac in Stellenbosch maybe we were spoilt early on. After all these 2 are 5 star locations.

Knysna itself is a very pleasant area to stay, I would also recommend a ride on the Tuk Tuks outside, they take you to the top of the hill which has some great photo opportunities.

Comfortable beds, very peaceful, facing lagoon. Nice bathroom & lovely products. Secure parking. Excellent breakfast. Good pool. Free use of internet. Good location. Plenty of restaurants nearby - our favourite was 34 degrees south. Some shop at marina to look around and only minutes to walk to old part. Footpath around part of lagoon for a good walk. Enjoyed walking on amazing beach at Brenton on Sea.

Simply Awesome! The best place visited till date. Located in the Garden Route. HAs one of the best climate and can be described as an ideal retirement house for any nature lover. The Hotel Protea is located on the harbour and has a direct access to the port. Simple interiors but well furnished and equipped.

Stayed for 4 nights earlier in Feb. Could have been a great anticlimax having just spent a week in the 5 star Mont Rochelle in Franschhoek. But it was absolutely fine. Really more a good 3 star hotel than a 4 star, like the Novotels in France, standard formula rooms but very comfortable and clean modern rooms and an airy Lobby. Superior room had a small balcony with view over the marina and the lagoon. Also had 2 double beds. Could have done without one of them so that there was room to move about and maybe a second armchair. Excellent pool ( by SA standards) with good service from the bar staff and comfortable loungers. Opens straight on to the Quays- the main tourist hub of the town. One tip for you- ignore all the formulaic seafood restaurants on the Quay ( more like Southend than South Africa) . Instead turn right at the quay as you walk out the back of the Hotel and walk for 4 or 5 minutes to the Cruise Cafe, a really lovely simple restaurant with a lovely position on the waterfront and delightful staff. We went 3 times.

Positives: The central but lagoonside location can't be beaten. Breakfast comprehensive and good for the hotel class.
Negatives: Room a bit cluttered owing to extra bed. I'd have been a bit pissed off if I'd had a car park facing room. Apart from the views, Knysna doesn't have much else to commend it.
