“Great view, great location, great hotel”
Reviewed 11 May 2014 via mobile

Knysna is set between the eastern and western Capes and is a great place to stop off on the way between the 2. Situated on a lagoon with the headlands separating it from the sea, it offers a perfect base to relax and visit the various beaches and natural splendours.

The falcons view sits up the hill and offers splendid views from the veranda and front rooms. The room we were in was spacious, but the bathroom was even larger, a jacuzzi helped soak away the long drive and there was a separate shower as well.
The staff were super helpful and friendly and a welcome drink was on offer. It is an easy stroll down to the town and the quays ( slightly !!, steeper on the way back), the house was owned by Thiessen and he was said to look at his plant from the house to make sure his workers were putting in a proper shift of work.
The breakfast was substantial and covered the gambit from a tremendous selection of fruits, breads and of course cooked foods.

Our hosts were friendly and helpful for advice on the local attractions. The room was huge, spotless and really comfortable, only downside was the breakfast as we didn't get what we ordered both days we stayed here. You have to eat at the olive tree restaurant which is very close if you can get in.

Three of us stayed here for two nights at the end of April and we had a fantastic stay. Our two rooms were in the main house with stunning views over Knysna and Thesen Island, with the Heads in the distance.

The rooms were immaculate and the bathrooms large and spacious. We loved the décor of the rooms and the hotel which we found elegant and stylish. Since the dinner of the first evening was so good we had dinner again on the second evening. The food was varied, plentiful and delicious. The dining room had a log fire which made the room cosy and inviting. Breakfasts were equally good with a large selection of both hot and cold food.

On our final morning, one of the hotel staff members noticed our car had a flat tyre. No problem, they said, we'll change it while you're having breakfast. This they did, and then cleaned the car which was muddy from the rain. The hotel is run seamlessly and everyone made us feel welcome and special. Other hoteliers should book to stay here and learn just what makes it so good. We tried to think of anything we would improve, and although we consider ourselves well travelled and discerning we couldn't think of anything.

We will definitely be back to see more of lovely Knysna and enjoy 5 star service and hospitality at Falcons View Manor.

Room Tip: Rooms 4 and 5 have stunning views over the town.

A truly lovely place to spend a night or two in beautiful Knysna - South Africa. An old house, now a National Heritage Site, is very comfortable with well appointed rooms and well maintained with beautiful views of Knysna.

Room Tip: Any room is a good room.

What a beautiful place to stay. It is so tranquil and yet so near to Knysna. Yes it is up a steep hill but we knew that before we went and you wouldn't get the spectacular views otherwise.

The gardens are immaculate as is the hotel. We had dinner on one night which was superb and would have used it on the second night but it was chef's night off. Not a problem - we had spent a busy day and so Sue arranged for us to have a sharing platter of cheese and cold meats on the veranda with a cold bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. How nice is that with extensive views across the night skies above town?

Breakfast was delicious served in the courtyard.

We needed more time in Knysna, there is so much to do and see. We will return to South Africa as soon as possible and will come to Knysna and will stay at the FVM again - no reason not to.

To get the great views you have to get up the steep hill, not to be recommended for walking. The garden and pool area is large and well maintained, and the verandah offers views across Knysna, but not the ocean. I enjoyed the public rooms, sadly I could not try the restaurant. Service is very friendly and efficient. My criticism is about the lighting: at night the car park and outdoors are poorly lit making it difficult to maneuver your car in the tight spots. And, I had the most ghastly bed side lamps you can imagine. Made out of metal wire they look like giant candy floss giving poor light and dangle 2m from the ceiling. Rooms are very spacious.

The hotel is in a good location and has a lovely old world charm. With a grading of 5 stars, I am not sure I would have rated the 4 rooms we booked in at that level. From the colour scheme to the bedroom layout it did not do it for us. These rooms did not have the majestic views & I am assuming that the main building rooms would be of 5 star status. Nevertheless all rooms should reflect the 5 stars.
