The boat trip across from the ferry point is about half an hour then a 4x4 trip to the top. It's then a 2.2km walk back down but much of this is through woodland so enjoy the views of the heads and coast when you get them. Not quite sure what we expected but came away slightly disappointed.

Dear 141AndyS

Thank you for your review. We are not quite sure what you expected either as you have experienced the unspoilt, undeveloped, natural heritage site, The Western Headland of Knysna, commonly known as The Featherbed Nature Reserve. It has and will always be our intention to keep the reserve in its pristine most natural state and therefore do not remove any flora to enable better sea views, but rather prefer them to be the spectacular surprize "sights" that they are.

We didn't look at TA reviews before going and we'd never set foot in Knysna before booking it but it wasn't the "eco-experience" we were expecting, essentially it's a short boat trip across the estuary, a ride up the hillside and short walk back down again. It was very busy - a large organised German tour group was included; and I guess that was the reason that Ali's commentary was a bit ponderous; it seems the local accented English is difficult for non-native English speakers to comprehend. But we were blessed by superb weather and a very favourable exchange rate, plus the hot buffet lunch at the park lodge was very nice, so it was an agreeable enough thing to do on a Sunday in March, and reasonably inexpensive. The most interesting fact is that the Reserve was purchased and created from the profits of the book J L B Smith wrote about the discovery of the "prehistoric" Coelacanth fish, and there is an interesting display of his artefacts at the Lodge.

What an amazing place! The trip over to the reserve is interesting and informative. But beware! Take good hiking shoes and sunblock with on your walk down the mountain. Guides lead the way down and the view across the lagoon is breath taking! Bit hard to walk if you not fit; so take it slow!
There is a little display window with the entire history of how the Smith family started Featherbed and the lunch offered was exceptional. Indeed a day to enjoy by the nature lover.

trip starts with boat trip over to the island, guides are informative and witty, we had Allie, she was a real treat with lots of knowledge on the surroundings. when you get to the island you get on an old truck for a steep drive up the mountain, breathtaking views over the area - the heads and the ocean. nice hike back to the restaurant where a mouth watering buffet is served. great way to explore the area and best views you can wish for over the Knysna Heads

Dear Charmaine

Thank you very much for visiting us. The old truck is actually a Unimog and commonly used in most game and nature reserves.

We are very pleased you enjoyed our beautiful piece of paradise.

We did the afternoon tour which did not include lunch. There was cold drinks (beer) for purchase at the end of the hike down. The views were unbelievable! It was a great trip hosted by Allie. She had lots of information about the local flora and it's medicinal uses. The hike down can be very steep and rocky in some parts but well worth it for the views. If you can't do the hike they will take you down on the tractor/transport vehicle. Glad we did this tour!
