I just love Knysna and I can see why the lagoon attracted the early inhabitants who settled here.
There is so much on offer in this vast amount of sheltered water and the first time tourist should take a trip on one of the many pleasure boats that go round the lagoon, pausing at the Heads so you can appreciate the strong currents and then resume the gentle journey back to the quay.
The mv "John Benn" has always been our first choice of travel round the lagoon as it is possible to do lunch while on the water. There are other faster options, which envolve kitting up in a life jacket and bouncing across the entrance to the lagoon and then out to do a spot of whale watching.
The waterfront area has a charm of its own and has been carefully developed with a variety of shops and restaurants.
The oyster farms are also part and parcel of Knysna's charm - and of course, there would be no crowd-pulling Oyster Festival without a good supply of these tasty treats. So whether you are down at the lagoon edge, or up high on one of the numerous vantage points above the lagoon, you are always aware of the attraction of this beautiful lagoon.
