Having read all the wonderful reviews on this site and carefully looking at Kanonkop's website we decided to treat ourselves to the Paradise Suite.

We arrived late at night, around 10.30pm to be greeted with a frosty welcome. The comment being “We were not sure if you would be turning up” despite an e-mail acknowledging that we would be arriving around that time.

When we were shown the Paradise Suite, my partner didn't know whether to laugh or cry!

The “suite” comprises only the one room! Everything, bed, bath, shower and toilet are part of the same room with only a small sliding partition to separate the room slightly. This means every noise and smell would permeate the whole room. There is also a convenient mirror opposite the toilet that allows you to watch whoever is on the toilet from the comfort of your bed. Why anyone would think this is acceptable is well beyond us both.

The room is relatively small with no sitting area, so how it can be called a suite is a mystery.

Our bed was damp and the louvres on the wardrobe doors were thick with dust.

Kanonkop is listed in Trip Advisor as a Hotel. In my opinion it's a B&B/Guest House and not a very good one at that.

We were supposed to stay for 4 nights, but left first thing the next morning.

Of our 16 nights on South Africa, this was by far the worst accommodation we stayed in.

We stayed in Knysna for 3 nights, out of a 7 night trip in the Garden route. (2 near Plett and 2 in wilderness)

We were lucky and managed to get the Paradise suite. Very nice room. It is built like a small tower on top of the main residential house, so you get windows and light from all 4 sides. Comfortable King Size bed, plasma TV, spacious bathroom and balcony with a great view of the lagoon. The furnishing is somewhat middle of the road between the classic and the contemporary. There is a kitchen counter downstairs where you can make coffee. Everything to make your stay comfortable.

I get the feeling that there is quite a hype about the paradise suite but I bet the other rooms are nice too. Yes, Paradise is definitely worth it but there is more to Kanonkop:

- Very nice service: Mark and his staff helped us organize our days efficiently, from restaurants recommendations to tours and activities.

- Great breakfast: attention to details, tons of fresh fruits, cold and hot breakfast.

- Nice grounds, very close to Knysna but far enough to have some quiet time away from it all.

The only drawback I can see to this place is the communal breakfast on a round table. Two days in a row we were the only one there, and on the last day there was a couple with us. It was nice as they were fun to talk to but I have a hard time imagining 8 people around the same table.

Other than that, very nice place. Definitely worth it. It is reasonably priced if you are traveling in the low season and especially if you stay for several nights and are able to negotiate the rate. It is common practice in SA.

We stayed in the Kanonkop Guest House in June 2007, as part of our Little Karoo / Garden Route drive from Capetown.

If you are lucky enough like we were to stay in the Paradise Suite, you will experience unadulterated luxury like never before!. This is probably the nicest room we have ever stayed in and the attention to detail is stunning. The photos will give you a good idea of what i mean!!.

The suite is really spacious, with a terrace overlooking the lagoon, i don't mean to be corny, but it is Paradise!. The whole property has an air of mature opulence about it, which is a credit to Chris and his family.

The service was excellent and location perfect for travelling to Monkeyland, Plettenberg, Tsitsikamma, Storm River etc and i would recommend Knysna over Plettenberg for its beauty and excellent restaurants. You really really have to try the Phantom Forest Restaurant, which is an unforgettable eco experience and one of the best restaurants we have ever been to, and all for less than 600 rand. (6 courses and wine and tip!). The Dry Docks restaurant is also excellent.

We couldn't recommend the Paradise Suite at Kanonkop Guest House highly enough, but stay at least 2/3 days!.

We spent 3 nights at Kanonkop at the beginning of March. The first 2 were in the Paradise Suite. When you get into the room you understand why its called Paradise. The decor is top class and very tasteful. The view is breathtaking and you wake to the sunrise over the lagoon. The bed is very comfy with beautiful linen and you feel totally spoilt in this suite. The only negative is the noise of the traffic from the N2 at the bottom of the hill does carry up.
We spent one night in the Sunbird Room and whilst this is of the same high quality decor and comfort, it is small. We found it a nuisance having to cross the corridor to the bathroom as you can come across another guest, so not ideal.
Chris and Mark run a very slick guest lodge and their hospitality and warmth is second to none. They go out of their way to assist you with plans to experience the area as well as making dinner arrangements in top class restaurants. A very warm and relaxed atmosphere where you feel totally indulged. The breakfasts are very sumptuous with a great choice of fresh fruits, yoghurts, smoothies, fresh orange juice, cooked breakfast - a wonderful start to the day.
We spent 3 weeks in South Africa and we definitely recommend this Guest Lodge as one of the best. We would suggest either the Paradise Suite or the two garden suites.
They have tortoises on the lawn where guests park - it took us a while to realise they weren't real!!

The first 5 minutes was enough to make us rework our travel plans to stay longer. Like the other reviewers say... Kanonkop truly is fantastic!

I don't want to be redundant so I'll just add a few things from our experience:
- the hospitality from the family and staff was warm and friendly, and above and beyond -- memorable.
- the size of the entire guesthouse was perfect -- not too large that it's impersonal, and not too small that you lack privacy.
- the location was great for us... just minutes from the town centre and right off the highway.
- Friday afternoon/evening there is an outdoor festival/picnic/BBQ just down the street, run by locals. Fun! Food, music, lots of people,... kind of like a beer garden with lots of families.
- Pictures speak for themselves... but again, don't do justice. The atmosphere is perfect for any person(s) looking to treat themselves.
- One night is definitely not enough.

My wife and I stayed at Kanonkop with another couple from Sweden during 8 days. This was our third stop during a roundtrip taking us from Cape Town to Lalibela Safari and back. Kanonkop and the Conyers family was the highlight of a fantastic vacation in Soth Africa. The guesthouse is just very charming and with an excellent standard. The Conyers family provide hospitality and service unparalell to anything we have met during many holiday trips around the world. We felt like priviliged members of a family and terribly spoiled. Advice and bookings of restaurants and the service to play some outstanding golf courses made our stay top class all the way. We can strongly recommend Kanonkop to anyone!
