The lofts is a unique boutique hotel situated on Thesen Island. The rooms are unique and beautifully decorated. Some of the more luxurious rooms have beautiful views over the Knysna lagoon, and the others all have big open balconies.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and Rhoda and Theo are very graciuous and friendly hosts.
A delicious breakfast at ile de pain is included which rounded of a prfect stay at the Lofts.
Thesen Island is a safe place to stay, we felt very comfortable walking around at night.
I would definately stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the tower rooms overlooking the lagoon, for a romantic stay.

We stayed at The Lofts in April 2012 so the weather wasn't really warm enough to enjoy the deck or pool. However, it not only had spectacular views across the Lagoon, but the building and rooms had been beautifully restored and renovated. We were in one of the 2 bedroom apartments which came equipped with 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a small kitchen. The staff were very friendly and there is a good selection of eateries and shops within walking distance (in addition to Kynsna Waterfron which is a 10min walk across the bridge). Beautiful, quirky hotel - would definitely recommend.

We stayed at The Lofts for three nights. We were pleasantly surprised with the Hotel. The rooms in the two bedroom suite were spacious, clean and every detail attended to. The rooms were services every day. The friendly staff was extremely helpful and tried to fulfill every request. Recommended restaurants were also deserving of the recommendation. The Hotel is situated in a quiet venue on Thesen Island and the ambiance was conducive to a good rest. The staff at the spa right next door was also very professional and friendly. A Great Thank You to Rhoda and Theo.

Room Tip: The two bedroom loft suites are great.

Our group of 4 arrived after a long day of travel and after a quick call found our keys and luxurious rooms waiting for us. Luckily we had wine, cheese, crackers with us and were able to enjoy it on our spacious balconies. The in-room mini fridge, plates, glasses, helped! The next morning we met The Lofts owner Rhoda. She couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. After a fabulous breakfast at Ile de Pain(included), a boat trip to the Featherbed Nature Reserve(another review) we came back to a rainy afternoon. What a great place to spend a rainy few hours. The lofts has a small kitchen game room with acess to wine, food, games, computer. Upstairs, there was a sitting room that looked out onto the Knysna Lagoon where we drank wine and played dominoes. Plenty of restaurants nearby (another review) in walking distance of The Lofts. The next day Rhoda contacted the Tsitsikamma Canopy tours to check our reservations and since it looked like rain to check on wether the zip-linning would happen or not. Another included breakfast, this time at The Turbine. The Lofts is definitely a clean, friendly, comfortable, place to stay. It is on Thesen Island, which is a redeveloped area of homes, shops, restaurants, etc. Great safe place to walk around at night for 4 women traveling together.

Room Tip: We stayed in rooms 2B and 6B. Not direct views of the lagoon, over the parking area. Rooms a little less expensive than direct views but were quiet, luxurious, and had spacious balconies with lounges.

My parents and I stayed at The Lofts for two nights during our driving trip around South Africa, and we were impressed with the quality of the rooms, the nice atmosphere being on Thesen Island, and the sea views. The hotel was situated in a quiet place and was very relaxed and relaxing.

We stayed in a two-bedroom loft, and we found the furniture and amenities to be modern. Our self-catering kitchen was comprehensive and expansive, though there were no laundry facilities.  The rooms were huge!  But the layout of our apartment was kind of confusing.  We had two ensuite bathrooms, but what was odd was that one bathroom only had a bathtub and the other bathroom only had a shower. So ultimately, my parents woke me up in the morning as they made their way upstairs to my shower...which wasn't great.  The second bedroom was truly a "loft," and you had top climb up a ladder to get to it. You also had to climb up and down VERY narrow steps to get to the upstairs bathroom. However, that being said, the other rooms I looked at (which were smaller) did not have this problem, so I won't mark down The Lofts for the odd layout of one room.

The service was attentive and helpful when we had questions. The front desk is not 24/7 and closes at 7:30pm, which is random.

The breakfast at Île de Pain was overhyped and unimpressive (a separate TripAdvisor review). We did not get the B&B package when we booked, but went to that cafe on the first morning because it's in the same building complex as The Lofts. We did not return for breakfast the second morning. There are other options for breakfast located on Thesen Island close to The Lofts, so I wouldn't recommend the B&B options.

Overall, I would recommend a stay at The Lofts. I felt that I got a good product for the price I paid, and Thesen Island is a gorgeous little community.  I don't know what percentage of the rooms are just normal flat rooms and what percentage are "lofts" or have stairs, but if you have mobility issues, I would recommend calling before you book to make sure you can get around in your own room.
