Although beautiful and elegante, I think the hotel has a sad atmosphere. We were travelling with 2 teenagers who felt very uncomfortable. Perfect for older people but not suitable for kids and teens. Also a little far from the city and very close to the noise of the road. However, excellent staff and food.

Room Tip: opposite side of the road

When we arrived, we were greeted with the words: How was your trip? Do you fancy a glass of champagne? Which was, after some bad experiences in other hotels, holiday straight away. The hotel is situated slightly outside of Knysnah right by the lagoon and offers beutiful views of the water and the city. The garden was beautiful and very well maintained and the multiple pools were very nice and spacious. The hotel itself was very well looked after and the rooms provided a lot of space, beautiful views and everything you could possibly wish for! The personnel was really friendly and helpful, knew how to provide an excellent service and knew their surroundings supporting in the organization of planned activities. In addition: Breakfast was really good - I recommend the eggs Benedict and dinner was so good that we stayed in both nights we were there. Overall: You receive very good value for the price and I can only recommend you to go there!!!

Real class and quality with spacious rooms and lovely ambience. The lawns open up onto the lagoon with plovers and Egyptian geese wandering around and the location outside of the main town may seem at first to be inconvenient, but it soon becomes evident (especially in peak holiday season) that it is incredible to be far from the madding crowd. The quiet, peaceful atmosphere just cannot be bought.
Rooms are spacious and well-appointed as are the public areas which open on to the lagoon as well. Beautiful gardens as well.
Breakfast is old style with a great selection from the buffet as well as to be ordered (salmon, cream cheese bagel and old-style eggs Benedict included).
Just so darn civilised and a great place top base yourself for exploration of the area.

Although impressed with the St. James on Trip Advisor, it exceeded our expectations, from the wonderful suite (all the "rooms" are suites!) which opened out on a patio leading down to the lake, to the beautiful gardens and swimpools, and elegant dining areas and lounge. Food was very high quality, and the friendly service was excellent. The reception staff were also very helpful. It certainly helped to make the 7 hour drive from Cape Town well worthwhile.

Room Tip: Choose between groundfloor suite in the annexe, or upstairs in main house.

My partner and I were driving to Knysna from Paternoster - quite a drive as I am sure you can Imagine. We found this wonderful hotel through expedia and we were delighted to see that they had one room left.

We arrived very late at night, after 10pm, to our surprise the manager was waiting for us and had kept the kitchen open for us in case we wanted a hot meal. We felt that this was a wonderful welcome to a fantastic hotel and were really looking forward to our stay.

The hotel is really comfortable and is elegantly decorated. The staff were friendly and gave us a lot of ideas for things to do when we were staying within the Knysna area.

The room was well equipped and featured a sofa, table, large kingsize bed and extremely spacious bathroom. The grounds are well maintained and are situated on the banks of the Knysna Lagoon

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 2 - very comfortable.

The St. James is a beautifully located on the lagune. We were welcomed by the staff, and shown to our room. The room looked out over part of the lagune. The decoration of the room was done verry tastfull. A nice sitting area. The bed was terrific and verry comfortable. The bathroom was verry spacious with a double sink, a bath and a shower. The shower had a good waterpressure which makes taking a shower a pleasure! We had a late lunch snack on the terrace. We also ate dinner at the hotel twice. On the menu were a lot of nice things to choose from aswell as from the winelist. The servers were most kind. The diningroom has a view over the lagune. The second night we had diner at the hotel they had put on the fireplace which gave the diningroom a verry warm and cozy atmosphere. Apart from the diningroom they have a nice open room where you can sit and also go on the internet, and a bar that is also verry ellegantly decorated. All in all een verry nice and comfortable hotel to stay in.
