Vrede Manor

This outstanding part of the world was matched by the wonderful accomadation we were lucky enough to be staying at, a large but homely manor house beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and very well appointed meant even when we were not sight seeing we still new we were on a very special holiday. Every aspect of the guest house had clearly been thought through carefully by the wonderful and welcoming owners Colin and Mark. From interior desgn and comfort to the truely beauiful gardens and relaxing pool area. Their local knowledge was impecable and advice on what was on offer to us meant we did and saw many things we may not have otherwise known about like the fantastic and cool Biscuit mill market, and the brand new bus service linked the guest house and cape town, V&A water front and other points of intrest with ease meaning you could happily stay without ever needing to use a car. Plus the bus was less then a pound so could save you alot of money.
If being in cape Town with an outstanding view of Table Mountain right next to the sea was not a good enough reason to get up in the morning then the breakfasts certainly are. We had a delishously different hot breatfast every day which was the perfect way to prepare yourself for Whale watching, wine farms, Cape point, Table mountain (which while we were away was announced as a new natural wonder of the world) or maybe something light like tea and toast with their Vrede Manor home made honey and jams before doing a shark dive.
The two weeks stay was as lovely, friendly and faultless from start to finish and we plan to return to this beautiful guest house in the near future. We have already been recommending to all our friends at home. Vrede Manor, Colin and Mark really made our stay a pleasure.

We stayed in the apartment for 5 nights at the end of September. We chose to stay out of Cape Town to avoid the 'tourist trap'. We found Vrede Manor on Tripadvisor and it totally lived up to the reviews.
The apartment was spotless, stocked with everything you would need to self cater if you wanted to. We ate out every night tho!
The main house was gorgeous and we were welcome to sit round on the patio if we wanted to. We had breakfast in the house on our first morning while we found our feet and that was excellent. Freshly squeezed orange, ground coffee aplenty.
Colin and Mark the owners are extremely friendly and always at hand with any information and suggestions as to what to do and get around. They made some excellent recommendations.
We felt totally safe in the area and the beach and couple of restaurants there were excellent and 5mins walk from the house. Cape Town was a short hop on the bus or 15min by car.
We would definitely return to Vrede Manor if we were to go back to Cape Town. The apartment is great value for money compared to staying in the city's hotels.
There were some nice little touches, arriving to the apartment with ambient music already playing, fresh flowers, candles provided around the place if you wanted atmosphere and stamped postcards to send if you wanted to. There was even a bbq on the private terrace if you wanted to cook outside. My only negative comment would be lack of lighting on the stairs.
So glad we found this little gem outside Cape Town, thanks Colin and Mark for making us feel so welcome and the excellent night at Mount Nelson!

Vrede Manor is a stately home in Milnerton, about 15 km from the centre of the city. It has two internal guest rooms and a separate apartment attached to the house with its own entrance. I stayed in the apartment for 4 weeks in May and June 2011.

The apartment is on two levels: Upstairs is an alcove for sleeping, a lounge room, a dressing room, bathroom and balcony. Downstairs is the kitchen.

It’s more than adequate for two people. It has a plenty of windows and oodles of natural light. And it’s very quiet apart from some traffic noise from nearby Ascot Rd during the morning peak hour.

The bed is new and comfortable but a little on the small side. I am 172 cm and my feet were touching the end, so I’m not sure whether this would be suitable for a tall person.

There are glass top bedside tables at each side but they have no drawers. There is a reading lamp above each bedside table.

The lounge is adequate and comfy and nicely decorated in soothing, modern colours of white, light blue and cream. It has a sofa, coffee table, TV table, dvd machine and even a small selection of books in the cabinet underneath the TV.

And next to the window is a small round glass-top dining table and two modern white swivel chairs.

The dressing room is a nice surprise and it’s where all the storage is – and there’s plenty of it, with a suite of white cupboards and a cabinet. There’s ample hanging space, shelves and drawers. And a chair and a large half mirror on the wall, which the ladies will find

The bathroom is huge but lacks secure, waterproof storage. So just use the dressing room next door, to store those toiletries you don’t want to get wet. The shower is above the bath and you’ll need to be careful here as there is no slip-proof mat or even a railing to hold onto. The shower screen is a swing open half glass door with a handle to open and close. It stops the water from ending up on the floor but just don’t swing the transparent glass door too wide because it may hit the granite basin. And I wouldn’t like to see the results of that!

The lovely large balcony has chairs and tables and it overlooks the courtyard and swimming pool.

There is a small lock-up safe with key entry but it’s in a very awkward and dark spot underneath the steps. And you’ll need to watch out not to bang your head when you stoop to open or close it.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a family-sized fridge, micro, oven and cooktop and all the cutlery, crockery, glassware and cookware you will need. There’s also a table with seating for two provided by bar stools. The kitchen is reached by a steep spiral staircase but here lies a small problem. If you have guests for dinner it would mean traipsing up and down the stairs with hot food. But if eating solo, no problem.

This is a bit of a neg. There is a small panel heater affixed to the wall in the lounge but it’s ineffective. So to solve the problem of not freezing to death in the chilly Cape winter, I went out and bought myself a little fan heater for R100 (equiv about $US15) and that did the trick.

Brilliant. All modern, suitably placed ceiling lights plus the two bedside lamps for extra brightness. Just excellent for reading anywhere you feel comfortable. Sun streams in on a sunny day.

Very limited local channels and one “cable” (DSTV) channel with Sky News from the UK. So don’t rely on this for your entertainment.

Cape Town is not as scary as Johannesburg, but this being SA, one of the crime capitals of the world, security should always be one of your first concerns. So this is the security setup at VM: Facing the street is a remote-controlled gate for car access. Then there’s a second “pedestrian” gate with access via a code typed into a keypad on the wall. Then a simple locking half-glass kitchen door and you’re in.

When out and about in any other South African city, it pays to be cautious at all times.

Cape Town is not a city renowned for its public transport. In fact in these parts it was virtually unknown until a year or so ago when the new metro buses started operating. But it does have excellent roads which are never really busy apart from at peak hours, so hiring a car is the thing to do here. Just remember to drive with your doors locked at all times and be prepared for the ubiquitous panhandlers you’ll meet at every traffic light, some selling stuff, some just begging.

And if you do hire a car, there’s an off street spot for it behind the secure gate. Petrol at R10 a litre (equiv around $US1.50) is cheap by Euro or Aussie standards.

There is wi fi available free of charge but I found the connectivity to be erratic. Colin (the co-owner) told me that the best reception was to be had in the lounge of the main house and he said I was welcome to work in there if necessary but I struggled on anyway and never took up his offer.

For R100 per load (equiv about $US15) they’ll do your washing for you and return it beautifully ironed and folded. There might be cheaper options at the local Laundromats but I found the in-house service so convenient that I never bothered looking elsewhere. And they provide a sturdy white bag appropriately labelled “Laundry” in big black letters to make it even easier for you.

As mentioned, VM is not in the city centre but then Cape Town city centre doesn’t have much to recommend it and it’s probably best avoided anyway. You can have a perfectly good time in one of the suburbs like Sea Point or Milnerton where VM is situated. If you have car, the modern Canal Walk shopping complex in nearby Century City is a 10 minute drive away. Also nearby are other shopping centres like Bayside, West Coast, Sable Centre and a host of restaurants and cafes – just as long as you don’t mind driving there because walking around at night in this place is not recommended. And in any event, there’s nothing within walking distance except for a small shopping centre called Centrepoint which has a supermarket, pharmacy and liquor outlet to keep you amused!

There is an outdoor swimming pool but that’s about the extent of the amenities here.

The apartment is cleaned and serviced twice a week on Mon and Thurs and that’s sufficient. Colin and Mark, the joint owners are friendly, helpful and polite and nothing is too much trouble for them. They will do whatever they can to make your stay a pleasant one.

A perfect place to stay for couples or solo travellers, but you should have a car to enjoy what this place has to offer.

Best features are the size of the accommodation, the huge amount of storage space and the friendly owners.

Worst features are the poor heating and erratic internet connection.

We stayed for 5 nights - the apartment had all we wanted and was really spacious. Colin and Mark were incredibly welcoming and informative - recommended great restaurant for our last night. You would need a car as it's just outside main part of CapeTown, tremendous value for money.

We stayed in a spacious beautiful room with ensuite shower room. It had a balcony we could sit and enjoy the weather and views. Mark & Colin's service being everything we could possibley have wished for. The breakfasts were varied and lovely quality. Their assistance helped us to reach all the locations we wished to explore, plus some new idea's. The location is only a sort car journey from Cape town, not at all difficult. We would highly recommend staying here and we most definately will return. The pets made it feel homely to us.
