We stayed at Monkey Valley over Easter 2014 with our 2 small kids and they just loved it. The resort is artfully built against the mountain and looks out over Noordhoek beach , stunning beach views actually , while providing a private gate to the beach itself. We went everyday and despite the cold water ( Cape waters are always cold , dont complain , for warm water try Durban... ) it was still lovely on the beach. While we found the walk to the beach down the hillside and back steep in places , it is manageable , even my 3 year old. The resort takes great pains to maintain all facilities and units and given that they are literally built on the mountainside the maintenance must be onerous , there was someone painting , chopping or fixing around the clock, and the attitude of all staff was really welcoming. Meals at Torfynns were fabulous , great service and in the evenings a fireside view of the mountain. Self -catering chalets were sold out, but I felt that the rack rate was reasonable for the double family room we had , including breakfast, The Claw footed baths are lovely and even we could lie full length in the bath, a rarity for tall people ! The breakfasts were lovely and the dining areas look right onto the sea view. Check in and out was quick and friendly and you get the sense that the staff are very engaged and happy to be there.

Room Tip: Garden facing rooms are just fine , sea -facing if you can get will obviously be best ,just FYI , the resort is not wheelchair friendly per se as the topography does not lend itself to easy access , likewise anyone infirm or injured , lots of walkways, mostly steep .. after all is on the mountainside, this is not a downside it's just to be noted for guests in that posistion

What a way to end the day off. We went up late afternoon and were seated on the balcony. Had some lovely sundowners followed by a mouth watering meal. The steak was melt in your mouth and the sea food curry was full of fish and delicious. We had excellent service - ask for a waiter called Alfred, he makes the experience all the more delightful. Amazing views on a starlit deck and all within a reasonable budget. This was 4 April 2014. Don't know what other reviews were on about but this is one to write home about.

We used Monkey Valley to hold a conference for 30 people in March. The rooms were very clean and the view spectacular. The food at Monkey Valley is suburb if you order from the restaurant (great seafood) - the buffet options have some room for improvement. We were very happy with Milton, Ifran and the receptionists for their high quality service.

Thanks Monkey Valley!!

What was meant to be a special evening turned into a very disappointing stay and we feel we need to warn others. The only saving grace is the view.

Where to start.

1) We were shown a lovely room and then went ahead to book it but on checking in given a totally different room not nearly the same or with same facilities.

2) Booking for a special stay/celebration but not being told before accepting the money that their restaurant is fully booked and there is nothing they can do. When asking for a room service option they were not even a little accommodating or trying to look for an alternative plan for their clients.

3) The TV not working. After 3 calls to reception, finally sent someone up and there was nothing they could do. 10pm that night they agreed something was wrong with the decoder and replaced it!! Not ideal

4) Sent feedback to the manager over 3 weeks ago and yet to receive some form of a reply or apology! Disgusting customer service.

These are just some of the points that made our stay and experience very disappointing. It could be such a stunning establishment with perfect location but definitely will not be staying again and no recommendations in the near future unless there is a serious change of management.

Be warned!

Beautiful room, location, delicious food, but it was really, really let down by its service.

When we went for dinner the service was so slow it seemed they had forgotten us - we had to keep going up to someone to order food, get our drinks, etc (waiting a good half an hour for someone to take our drinks or food order - the table next to us left). However the food came out on time (but before our drinks!) and was delicious.

We also had issues when trying to book - they asked for our bank details, then we didn't hear back from them until the night before our stay - despite us trying to get in touch several times to cancel over a month, and us therefore having to change our plans at the last minute. Not very reassuring giving your bank details and then not hearing back..

They also gave preferential treatment to visitors that were in a travel group (living up to the 'resort' in its name) - letting them be drunk and loud at midnight. I had to call to ask reception to ask them to make less noise (reception was right next to the pool where they were all sitting - so its not like they couldn't hear them). He mumbled and put the phone down on me.

As we left I mentioned the issues we'd had to the manager, and we even filled out one of those comment forms - he said he would read it and email us back - that was almost a month ago. Nice to be a valued customer.

Really such a shame, really nice room with a view, nice view from restaurant with lovely food, just everything else really dampened the enjoyment and will next time find somewhere else in Noordhoek.

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet, probably best to go for a lodge as the other rooms are all very close together and you can hear your neighbours.
