“excellent food and atmosphere”

The restaurant has great atmosphere with an old colonial feel. Our meal was of great quality and i especially liked the ostrich fillet. Service was also great. Not all hotels have a good restaurants this one does.

“Delightful evening!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2014

Treat yourself to the colonial atmosphere of this 1880 establishment! Friendly service and very good food. Soon after ordering from a not too comprehensive menu, freshly baked bread with herbed butter and tahini arrived. My partner ordered Mossel Bay sole which was served with delicious mustard flavoured mashed potato, peas and wilted lettuce. My sirloin steak was cooked to perfection (rare) accompanied by French fries and vegetables. Creamed spinach was ordered as a side dish but, although delicious, not really necessary in view of the size of the main portions. The wine list was good. We settled for two different wines, 250 millimetres per carafe, which was both economical and just fine! A sumptuous buffet was on offer for the really hungry and the chef was in attendance throughout the various platings We left feeling contented and spoilt after a lovely evening out.

“A sense of the old Africa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2014

We managed to book a table at the Colony as a last resort on what was an extrememly quiet Sunday evening in town. It turned out to be a real treat! The upstairs terrace overlooked the main street in Oudtshoorn and we had a corner table with excellent service throughout our dinner. The menu choice was tempting but not overwhelming and our food was served fresh and hot, with the usual huge South African portions. Wine choices were as good as the food - the Pinotage was sublime! When the bill came, we were once again pleasantly surprised at the amazing value for money. The Colony is a place that could be easily missed, so we felt that we were lucky to have found it as it added a nice touch of old colonial South Africa to our trip.

“A little hit and miss....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014

The Queens is an older, traditional hotel and the Colony is just as you would expect in such an establishment. And a pleasant place to eat it is, as a result.

I ate the lamb rack and it was very good, cooked as ordered. My wife's steak, on the other hand missed. We have had great meat in SA - this did not qualify. Not bad, just not good.

Desserts were fine, service was good, but we told our waitress that the steak was not great and she reported back that "chef thanked us for letting him know". Would a chef not already know?

So - 50:50. Great lamb, not great steak and an indifferent response. We might not rush back.
