This tour is definitely worth the early wake up call. Our guide was clearly very knowledgeable and quite passionate about studying the meerkats. They scout out where the meerkats will be the night before, so you can see them pop out of their burrows at sunrise to warm up. We learned so much about these cute (and vicious) creatures. The camp chairs, blankets, coffee, and rusks were all a nice touch as well.

What an amazing experience to see and take close up photos of Meerkats in their natural habitat. Devey and his team have a wealth of knowledge and experience to ensure you're fully informed about these wonderful animals. It's a must do if staying in or around the area ( a great reward for the early start )

We spent over an hour with a group of 10 meerkats. They posed, they frolicked, they stood up and we sat in folding chairs 10 feet away. This is an amazing experience and from what I hear is the only group to reliably get you to the meerkats. Go with these guys!

The was such a wonderful experience. We started with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate and rusks, and then set up our chairs to wait for the meerkats to awaken, which they did about 10 minutes after we arrived. It was fascinating to watch them go about their morning business without paying any mind to us humans. The guide, Anja (I may be spelling her name wrong) was very knowledgeable. We were able to get great pictures of the meerkats in the colony. Highly recommended for Oudtshoorn visitors!

Devey and his two assistant field guides are passionate about their research and very knowledgeable about the meerkats (as well as the other animals that may be encountered such as the rusk-eating mice at the coffee stop). Given the number of different burrows that meerkats may occupy from time to time, and the large home range in which they live, there is no guarantee that the meerkats will be easily or quickly found first thing in the morning as the sun is about to rise. However the knowledge and observations of the guides allows for a well-informed decision to be made. We were seated approximately 5 metres from the chosen burrow and within 15 minutes the first head popped up. Over the next 20 minutes or so, the entire family of ten appeared and stood facing the sun, warming themselves up on a cold winter morning (2 degrees Celsius). This meerkat family is relatively habituated to a human presence and unworried by tourists sitting in folding chairs and looking at them. As such, they were able to go about their normal behaviours such as greeting rituals, scanning the sky and the bush for predators, and warming up ... our proximity to them allowed for unimpeded observations of these behaviours as well as excellent photo opportunities. All up, we had about an hour with the meerkats before we left ... and they also left to start their foraging activities for the day.
While the tour cost may seem expensive to some people, it helps to fund equipment and ongoing research which involves long hours of study and observation in the field. The knowledge generated from such activities will help with meerkat conservation and will also help to provide a better experience for travellers interested in the wildlife of the Klein Karoo.
