“Birding walhalla”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2013

The Karoo is my favourite place on earth and time and time again I am suprised how full of life this deserted region in South Africa is.
We visited Red Stone Hills, approx. 30 km west of Oudtshoorn. The tops of the mountains still full of snow, the nights freezing cold and the days nice and warm.
Petro Potgieter runs lovely authentic voortrekker cottages that are equipped with everything that one needs in both winter and summer. The dining room with its build-in braai is magnificient, our own indoor bonfire kept us warm at night.

With more than 200 bird species in the area, Red Stone Hills is a walhalla for birders, Not only booted eagles and birds of prey, but also various species of sunbird. The more adventurous will enjoy this part of the world as. Magnificient walks with spectacular views. But if you rather sit on the porch and read a book, then Red Stone Hills is the right place to stay. Close enough to shops and away enough to enjoy quietness and starry nights.

Our stay at Red Stone Hill was pure enjoyment. Nice comfortable and clean farm-style chalet with panoramic views of the breathtaking surroundings and good personal service from owner. I will go their again, cant wait.

We had a lovely family getaway at Red Stone Hills. Beautiful little cottage with cosy bedrooms for the cold snowy nights. We had the most amazing bundu bashing walks to the bushman caves with breathtaking views. The kids could not get enough of all the activities, especially mountain biking and horse riding. Even got mom on the bike and horse! The hospitality was excellent. We had a great stay and will definitely be back for more.

Thank you Petro for a wonderful stay! This was the second time we stayed in one of your quaint cottages and enjoyed its rustic charme. We love coming to the karoo and Red Stone Hills is a very special place. The spring flowers added to the experience as did the hot bath and cosy beds on a cold night. One thing I like to mention is that we discovered the Calitzdorp Art Route 62 by pure chance and enjoyed Roger Young´s gallery which is a short drive from your farm very much. It would be surely very much appreciated by future guests if you would have some brochures available in the cottages.

When running your own business there is almost always little or no time at all for a holiday. After moving our premises we decided to take a break to coincide with overseas visitors stay. After reading a review of Red Stone in Country Life and contacting the owners, we booked and drove up from Cape Town. The trip up the sand road was almost a bridge too far but that relates to a long drive up the Garden Route (for the sake of the overseas visitors). The farm is genuinely rural and a working farm of great beauty and unadulterated naturalness, There are no frills and no pandering to the "city" folk. You get a beautiful vintage cottage (ours dated to 1888) with everything you need for a comfortable stay, including extra duvets and hot water bottles for the Karoo cold nights. You get views straight from heaven, walks, birds in abundance (210 species), horse-riding, swimming etc etc.
Only complaint was the fact the DSTV is limited to sport and basic SABC and MNet and there was not mobile connection BUT, of course, for a propery holiday you don't need your phone!
Thank you to the lovely owners for the friendliness, kindness, helpfulness and genuine approach.
A holiday and a true rest was had by all!!! :) AND THE BEST PART - we could take our little doggie who cannot live without us :)
P.S. Will upload more photos shortly.

Room Tip: If you can - go for the Bushman's Cottage

After noisy Cape Town, staying at Red Stone Hills was soothing and restfulllas the quiet red rock hills surround this small valley. Night sounds included ostrich and sheep, and in the morning birds are busy as the sun sets the red hills ablaze around breakfast time- what a spectacle!. We had a wonderful time and were privileged to be welcomed again this year by Petro and Hermanus. When returning with the students to South Africa in future, we will be sure to visit this wonderful Klein Karoo gem again!

Room Tip: Wonderful cottages accomodate different numbers of guests and each have their own terrace with BBQ a...

Spontaneously we decided to stay here for one night - great decision! At night we could see lots of stars and at day we had an amazing hike/rock climbing experience with a fantastic view over these red mountains. Accomodation was affordable (even for students) and somewhat luxury (especially for students).
