“Perfect place to spend a night while visiting the area”
Reviewed 3 February 2012

We usually plan our trips well in advance, but we changed our itinerary at the last minute and end up in Oudtshoorn to find a place to sleep before visiting Cango Caves next morning.

Most of the nice guesthouse were fully booked because of weddings, or too expensive just to spend a night (1500 to 2000 Rands just to sleep the four of us).

So we end up at Protea Riempie paying less than 700R for a small and outdated room, but relatively clean. Kids had fun at the playing ground while we had a little glass of wine in the "back yard".

Since there's a restaurant on site, we decided to go the easy way and dine there. The staff was very kind and the food was OK. We were not expecting much, so we were happy to save a few bucks!

Stayed here for 2 nights and would have liked longer. Rooms are a bit dated but clean with good air con. 20 min. walk into town. Enjoyed the restaurant and the ostrich was perfectly cooked. Very helpful staff. Peacefull setting with beautifully kept grounds. Small pool, great for cooling off after a hard day at the caves & elephant park.

Visited the hotel twice already this year and when I went again for the 3RD time I sweared to myself I'll never go there again. The menu is always the same, they have a few options to choose from, they serve their menu with fried chips and bread always. NO Rice, Pap or Pasta, bread is boring to eat it day in and day out.

Their lunch packs are just awful, they taste like they were prepared in a paraffin filled kitchen.

OH MY GOD< Their rooms have fleas , where can you expect to be bitten by a FLEA in a hotel nogal.

Their boss lady is just NOT PROFESSIONAL she doesn't have a correct way or manner to address other people especially if you're from a different race.

I'll never ever book that so called hotel again, it doesn't deserve to be called a three star hotel, it's far from being that. It hasn't got any extra activities, if you need a gym or any other thing you have to go outside the hotel and do other activities.

The place is just plain boring to be honest.

Room Tip: Most rooms have broken Aircons and fleas.

Stayed in one of the roundavels, which unfortunately was very dated and did not feel very clean nor comfortable. Perhaps the standard rooms are a better choice if they have been renovated more recently. Breakfast quality was better than average. Overall good value.

Ourdoor chalets with a lovely garden - this is an standard hotel near the caves and cango ranch - the rooms were quite nice and the meals were good value for the price. The hotel is fully functional and serves its purpose - we enjoyed our stay and would revisit - I would recommend more tours and activities are offered to guests

We stayed at the Protea Hotel Riempie Estate from the 17th – 19th August 2009. My party consisted of two adults and two children (aged 10 and 8 years).

The thatched hut type accommodation whilst not spacious is at least clean. The two double beds were sufficient for a family of four (just). The only problem concerns soundproofing; you can hear your next door neighbour. However the rooms do represent good value budget accommodation.

The grounds contain a small playground which occupied the children for a while. Reception staff were very efficient and offered a welcome drink on arrival, which was appreciated. The evening buffet meal was a big disappointment. I have travelled the length and breadth of South Africa over the past decade and this meal at Protea Riempie Estate was the worst I can remember. The selection was very limited and fairly bland. On our second night we walked down the road in the direction of central Oudtshoorn. A few hundred yards away on Baron Van Heerde Street we came across the Swiss Bistro. This place turned out to be an inspiring find, rather unpretentious, plastic table cloths, roaring log fire, and most importantly lots of South Africa game meat on the menu. The food was excellent and inexpensive.

The Protea Riempie Estate is a good base for exploring the countryside around Oudtshoorn, such as the Cango Caves or Ostrich Farms.

Quirky hotel with a series of individual thatched huts standing in immaculate grounds.

Friendly reception staff and room was OK, albeit some of the room furniture was a little dated and showing its age...

All was well until late afternoon when our neighbours on one side arrived with one small dog that remained sight unseen but proceeded to yap its way through the evening and half the night... and half an hour later the guests arrived on the other side with some giant 4 legged beast that proceeded to race around the grounds with 3 or 4 screaming kids in tow.

Maybe we were unlucky but reading the room directory which states that only guide dogs are allowed, in practice this is clearly not the case.
