“OK for one night”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2014

We knew that we were arriving late and leaving early, so really just needed a bed for the night and decided that cheap and cheerful would suffice. This place looked OK and we managed to get a room for £34 through Agoda.

The location is around 1Km from the centre of town on a continuation of the main road, so although you need to drive to get to the restaurants of town it is less than 3 minutes away.

The hotel did have a bit of a motel feel about it. Our roundavel room was OK - but very small, basic, dated, tiny double bed, no minibar or in-room safe and nosiy aircon - but for the price paid I am not going to argue. There's a nice swimming pool, bar (with pool table) and restaurant, but the latter was unavailable due to a wedding. Breakfast is very expensive at around £10/head if not included in the room rate.

Overall, OK for one night if you just need somewhere cheap to lay your head, but if you want more then there will be much better places around.

We had stayed at other Protea hotels during this trip and were looking forward to staying at this hotel - but what a disappointment. Our room was small, cold and very much in need of a make-over. With our cases on the stands there was nowhere to sit apart from the beds. The dressing table was mostly taken up by a kettle and tea/coffee things. To our amusement the cord from the kettle went through the top of the dressing table and the cord to the hair dryer was actually passed through a hole in the back of the drawer!

Stayed here for a night while on our way to George and were pleasantly surprised. The rondavel (thatched roof huts) style rooms were a welcome break from regular hotel suites and the lush green lawns were rejuvanating in the hot dry climate. The rooms were spacious, air conditioned and beds were comfortable. Restaurant menu is very limited but the food was good.

Stayed as part o a large group at beginning of October as was lucky enough to be allocated a thatched rondavaal. I was surprised to find how large, clean and comfortable it was plus the room had a fridge. The staff were polite and helpful and the food was good. The place is very isolated hence the peaceful location. The town of Oudsthoorn is some distance away which is not a problem as it is so small and there is nothing of interest to see.

We arrived were given the key to our chalet, it was dank, smelly and uninviting, we asked to change the second one was as bad. when we mentioned the smell we were told it was the thatch and it was natural to smell like that, strangely my thatched house in the uk doesn't, nor did the three other thatched properties we stayed in over the last week.
When we checked out they weren't even surprised enough to ask why. We logged onto the wifi in reception and found a much more pleasant place to stay, strangely we weren't the first to have bailed out and gone there from the Riempie.

In short tired, past it's best, with staff who can't be bothered.....avoid

I stayed here on 4th September 2013 as part of a group. Bedroom was ok but heated by just an on wall heater - it was very chilly and the heater took ages to heat the room - very antiquated. No heating in bathroom - miserably cold. I couldn't get the control on the bath to work to convert from bath to shower. I asked at reception for it to be fixed - no one came. I would hate to stay here in their winter. On the plus side, gardens were pleasant and they served a very good meal of ostrich - lovely and tender. Given the choice I would not particularly like to go back to this hotel. Was pleased the stay was only for one night.

The hotel is a bit out of town, anyway oudtshoorn itself is considered outskirts of other town, so if one looking for a peace and quiet place, this is a right place to be. The building could be considered as authentic African design with chalets and rondavels ( even the roof is made traditional way). Room quite spacious and well equipped.
Breakfast buffet was quite variety and even serve halal food ( good point for Muslim traveller)
