As other reviews we found the rooms very small. We were travelling with our 2 small daughters and the staff insisted that there were no adjoining rooms, so we had to split up with my husband in one room with one daughter and I in the other with our 2nd daughter. They also put us in different corridors - no explanation as to why, and staff fairly uninterested in helping.

This hotel has several pictures up of their heyday, and I'm not sure they have moved on.

It was surface clean, but when I moved the bathmat off the bath onto the floor, there was mould on the underside. Yuk.

Outshoorn is lacking in a good alternative from what we saw, but it wouldn't take much to outdo this hotel.

Breakfast was OK. Some good local selections which we hadn't seen at other hotels. Breakfast staff were good and very helpful.

This hotel is an OK selection, but reception staff and bathrooms need work.

The Outshoorn location was a neccesity for us with the caves and the Cango wildlife park - both a must do if you are in the area.

We stayed overnight at the hotel.
The check in was smooth .The hotel is nicely located near a number of restaurants
It has a nice ambience -a lovely lounge which guests can use.
The breakfast was really good -live hot food counter where we could order our eggs. A lovely choice of hot and cold breakfast options.
However the rooms were small but since we were there for one night it was ok

This hotel is in a good location although we weren't overly thrilled with Oudtshoorn itself. It's a very big bustling town but not the kind you particularly want to visit. However, it's worth staying here for the proximity to the Cango Wildlife Park which is great. Back to the hotel though - Lovely big impressive colonial reception area, but the rooms are very small. The bathroom is basic but had a good powerful shower. Breakfast was good but the service wasn't great on our second morning. We ate in the hotel restaurant and the food was excellent. Overall, it was ok.

Second visit to this happily-surviving stylish period-piece and remain happy with it. Hotel had kindly arranged two sleeper couches in our room for the nippers. Bit cramped, but who goes to Oudtshoorn to stay in their room? It was clean and pleasant; plentiful (high-pressure!) hot water. Double-glazing shut out the yakking of the party of old (deaf?) Swedes at the fishpool terrace below and the clatter of the kitchen opposite. Said terrace a very pleasant place to eat your old-school colonial breakfast of a morning. Balcony of the nostalgic Colony Restaurant an equally good place to eat your Karoo specialties at dinner (though beware an arrogant under-cooking of clearly-specified meat). Swimming pool a welcome shady place to avoid the 38 degree heat in miod-afternoon. The hotel manages both to evoke and live up to standards of a bygone age and is a pleasure to come back to after a busy day in and around this fascinating town.

What a disappointment! At the millenium I had breakfast here and was so impressed that 10 years later I came back for a stay. I should have stuck with the breakfast which is still good and the serving staff excellent.

The hotel however, is dingy and oppressive with noisy airconditioners in 2 different rooms we tried, cheap, thin carpeting on the floors and "hospital" bathrooms. It is also seriously understaffed with the result that staff bicker amongst themselves, the housekeeper berating the reservations manager (a very young girl with no authority to make any real decisions) in front of me, in Afrikaans, thinking that as an overseas visitor I would not understand.

On our first night a smoke alarm kept going off (apparently it was situated too close to the kitchen), while we tried to get our young child to sleep. No cot was provided although we had requested this months in advance. The gaps in the balustrade on the staircase were big enough for me to climb through, let alone a small child.

This hotel seems to catch a lot of the coach tour trade. They come in at night, get a welcome drink, go to bed, get up, have breakfast and leave. However, I even heard the Dutch tourists complaining at breakfast about what a terrible night they'd had.

Despite the shoddy service and condition of the hotel and room, the manageress wasn't authorised to do anything beyond give us the tour group rate for one of the nights as compensation - the grand sum of $20 AUD.

We stayed just one night here but found it to be a beautiful colonial era hotel, well maintained and charming. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We had dinner in the Colony restaurant and found the food to be delicious and the service excellent. The bar area is very inviting and comfortable. We had a room with a double bed and a single and our only complain was that the big bed was a bit too soft and the single (for our daughter) was very hard.
