It doesn't seem a 4 star hotel at all! Tiny rooms, narrow beds and in the one we slept there was a disgusting smoke smell, although it is a non smoking hotel, very unfortunate. The carpets were stained. The bathroom was old fashioned but nice and clean. We had to ask for the safe box key once we were upstairs and go down again for the wifi password. The people in the front desk was not as helpfull and nice as I expected. Breakfast in the gallery was OK. The whole ambiance is delicate , simple and pleasant.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a trip around the western cape. Initial difficulty locating the parking as one way system in front of hotel means access is a little difficult by car. The room is average for a hotel of this rating, no fridge (really needed in this hot place) and only meagre rations of coffee and tea in the room. However, service and food in the restaurant have more than made up for this, the ostrich steak in port wine sauce is superb and local wines on the menu are very good value for money. Staff are attentive, pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: Choose a room around the back, those on the front can be disturbed by traffic noise.

A lovely old-world hotel in the centre of town. It has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. The furniture in the public rooms has been restored and reupholstered. It would compare favourably with a top notch London hotel. The service and staff were great, as was the food. The only let down was the pool which needed a good clean. Beware of the shower as there was no thermostat on the one in our room so if the water suddenly became scalding hot we could not get to the taps to turn it off! Thermostatic showers do not seem common in South Africa.

May have been top quality in 1947 when the Queen visited but it needs an upgrade. If they offer you room 111, walk out. It's on a corner and tiny. The first night, the settee (the only place to sit) was missing the back cushions. These appeared the next day but in recompense, the cleaning staff had turned the aircon off. Great for a room that faces the sun all day. No facilities for keeping things cool and one usable plug, with a UK adapter, in the room. WiFi free but it took so long to load the hotmail login page, my laptop went into standby. Breakfast was adequate, didn't try the dining room. The hotel is on a busy main road with a population that appears to be addicted to dubstep. Avoid.

Room Tip: Front Rooms 102-109 look decent, avoid corner rooms.

Our tour group checked in and loved it, the beautifully appointed gardens and public rooms and central location in the town made it a perfect stopping off point, although another night to fully enjoy the pool area and stroll around the charming town would have been desirable. The buffet dinner was the best experienced in South Africa in 16 days and the chefs, who were serving, are to be commended, their version of ostrich knocked the rest we tried into a cocked hat. Proper puddings too! The ambiance in both the dining room and breakfast room was charming and the courtyard garden delightful. Yes the bedrooms are a tad small, having had an en-suite added as a later improvement, but they were very comfortable and the rest of the hotel more than compensated. Charming efficient staff throughout, but no bacon on the breakfast menu surprisingly, maybe just on the day I was there.

Such a lovely hotel with a bygone era feel about it. The bar and lounge area is so perfect with a feel of total relaxation. Nice garden and terrace to take breakfast. Small swimming pool in garden has a past era feel also. Please stay as you are as there are not enough olde world hotels left in such good condition. Wifi available in reception area.
Well placed in the town for good access to shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: Very few views from all directions. We had rear room and only noise was from birds from 4.30am.
