I have been on a 10 day trip of S Africa and this place easily ranks as the best I have stayed on my trip. The place is a little out of town in Oudtshoorn but the place is simply out of the world. The cottages are done up beautifully with amazing attention to detail. Given it is out of the city, the place is so silent that you can hear a pin drop. We just stayed one night but the food was also quite good and you have to order it before hand. If I had another chance to come back and stay here, I would definitely do that.

Fleeting stay. Gorgeous rooms, lovely pool area. Beautiful dining room with excellent ostrich dinner. The welcome drinks were a very nice touch. Loved the free standing bath in the bathroom. Could have stayed longer just for the hotel.

We travelled here from Hermanus in March 14 - a 4 hour drive which in itself was very pleasant with interesting views and excellent, empty roads. The lodge is 20 minutes outside Oudtshoorn in a small hamlet. The region is hot and arid but surprisingly it rained on our 2nd day. The rooms are excellent, although a little gloomy. There is a nice pool for swimming. Wifi available in communal areas of main house. The food was ok with buffet breakfast and a slightly disappointing dinner on our first night. I would recommend Jemima's restaurant in town. There isn't too much to do in the area apart from ostrich related activities and the Cango caves, although we did have a nice walk in the Gamkaberg nature reserve and others said it was a great drive over the Swartberg pass to Prince Albert. Overall we thought it worthwhile coming here and we enjoyed our stay at La Plume. Bare in mind that there are no ostriches on site, so don't expect to have them poking their heads through your bedroom window !

Dear richard m

Thank you so much for your review - all comments are appreciated.

I just need to clarify one or two things. La Plume Guest House is situated only 14km outside Oudtshoorn, which means it's a less than 10 min drive into town. WiFi is available in all rooms and not only in the main house.

Apart from the ostriches and caves there are numerous other activities to fill your day: a farm tour with Bartel, the owner of La Plume, camel rides at Wilgewandel, Meerkat adventures with Devey, playing with the cheetahs and Bengal tiger cubs at Cango Wildlife ranch, elephant safaris at Buffelsdrift, a visit to the museum and the ostrich palaces, to name but a few. All this information is on the map we hand out in the morning: it is the guest's decision what they want to do and what to leave out. Some peolple actually just relax by the pool the whole day!!

It is really sad to hear that you found the dinner disappointing. You did not elaborate, so it is very difficult for me to comment on this. I do however feel that, by looking at the other recent reviews and the way they praise the dinner, that this might have been a matter of personal taste. Regardless, I'm still sorry that we did not meet your expectations.

I'm glad you have enjoyed your stay with us (through the much needed rain and all!) - I hope you have fond memories of your time in South Africa and that you will return to our beautiful country one day.

Kindest regards
Corlu

Guest houses in the United Kingdom have a somewhat chequered reputation but when our driver brought us to La Plume we were totally overwhelmed. We were greeted with a drink on our arrival and there was a carafe of port in our room. This and all of the reception rooms were beautifully furnished with stunning Oregon pine window frames and flooring. The quality of the food at both breakfast and dinner was exceptional - the best ostrich steak ever!
We would thoroughly recommend La Plume and very much hope to return one day.

Dear Peter F

Thank you so much for your much appreciated review. It is always great to see that there are guests who notice and appreciate the effort we put in. I especially appreciate your comments regarding the meals, since that is the one area where we are exposed to unfair criticism.

We would love to have you as our guests again: Whenever in the neighborhood...

This is a stunning place. Beautiful setting about 10 minutes outside Oudtshoorn. The owners have made a fantastic effort with lush green lawns, outdoor pool, water fountain and shaded areas to enjoy the stunning scenery. The rooms are beautifully decorated in a traditional style with quirky antique furniture. We opted for the evening meal and found this to be very acceptable in a lovely dining room setting.
Only 5 minutes down the road there is Highgate Ostrich farm, and a little further away one can 'visit the wild Meerkats'.
Only 2 slight criticisms: the pool cleaner was in the pool all the time we were there. I asked about this and was told it was because in a farming area in the country it has to be there all the time?
It would have been nice to have had the cooked breakfasts individually cooked to order rather than the fried / scrambled eggs left on a hot tray for the 2 hours of breakfast service.
As far as the poor internet service mentioned in other reports is concerned, we live in a country area of the UK and speeds will not be as good as in big cities.
In spite of my minor criticisms, I'm still giving this place 5*. Will stay longer next time.

Dear robinjn1

Thank you for your positive review of La Plume - please know it is much appreciated.

Regarding the pool cleaner - we are situated on a farm in a semi desert and there is no other way for us to ensure that a thin film of dust doesn't settle on the swimming pool floor. I would love to have a pool without a creepy crawly, but that is not in the cards for me! Sometimes guests take it out of the pool and then the next guests complain about the pool being dirty... talk about between the devil and the deep blue sea!

We have actually discussed preparing breakfasts individually, but especially with large numbers of people eating at the same time it results in people having to wait, which would just lead to the next complaint. Hot breakfast is prepared for every "time group" coming in, so it is changed every 15 - 20 minutes. We are still trying to fine tune our individually prepared breakfasts, we want it to work!!

I hope you left this country with fond memories and that you will return one day!

Kindest regards
Corlu

We used LA Plume as a one night stop over on our recent touring holiday and what a treat it turned out to be. After a long drive it was like an oasis in a desert. After a welcome swim and relax in the garden, our room turned out to be a fabulous experience of the wealthy lifestyle of the ostrich feather rich farmers. Our stay went from strength to strength as we enjoyed a wonderful evening meal(ostrich steak was stunning) and a perfect breakfast. Our host was great and sent us on our way with very useful information.
