This was a completely new type of experience for my husband and I and we had a great time.
Everything about our two night stay was 5 star, the tented accommodation, the setting, the activities, the food and in particular the staff. We took the Sundowner Safari, the Morning Safari and the Elephant Experience and in all of these activities the Guides were very knowledgeable and keen to ensure that we had a great time. Special mention for the Elephant handlers who were very friendly and helpful.

I decided to give myself a birthday treat and spent a night at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge. it made my birthday an unforgettable one. The tented accommodation was five star and the bathroom and outside shower was a great experience. The highlight for me was just lazing at the very edge of the lake, watching elephant, hippo and various antelope. It was so relaxing, I gave the game drive a miss.

The restaurant offered a culinary experience that will be hard to equal anywhere in South Africa. I know where I want to spend my next birthday.

Room Tip: Choose a waterfront tent.

Booked an overnight stay with 1 activity and B&B. And left very diappointed.

We were greeted at the gate with an unfriendly "Oh you're early" and left without a smile or an "enjoy your trip". We were not greeted at the car park by a staff member (which other Lodges do - even if you are early). Staff at the reception is doing there best but again not very well trained nor too friendly. Not giving away too much information about your schedule and what to do when or where or....

Tent is amazing - great view from your bed accross the waterhole, very tidy, lacking nothing you could possibly wish for.
But again - undecided whether to go on the rainy evening or next morning we were left with a can't be bothered reply by the guide that it was entirely our decision and they couldn't give any advise whatsoever about the wheather conditions or what the safari might be like during rain - how are you supposed to make a decision without any experiences in the area let alone with safaris? Thankfully WE knew how to read a whatherforecast and decided to go in the morning..

Dinner was average, nothing special, again service was ok bur rather poor (although there are exepions to the rule). BUT saw some Hippos in the water! Big plus.

Of course NO coffe or tea was offered before the early morning drive (Garden Route Game Lodge does of course). Safari was beeing led by a highly unambitioned guide, stopping here and there to give away some information he has obviously done in the exact same way maaany times. Talking about some Gemsbock in the distance but a s we couldn't see the features from like 2km away they were a bit useless. Neither a very entertaining nor enthuisastic guide and completey unanware that this might just be the only Safari for the poeple he is showing around! We saw some Giraffes, Springbok, 2 different Antilopes and Meercats. Fortunately towards the end one of the guests spottet a Rhino! That kind of made our frozen spririts go up again. Getting off the car again no thank you have a nice day, come visit again ,no explanations or ... no nothing. We have NO idea for which reasons the guides are beeing guides but certainly not for their ability to be attentive or enthusiastic.

I would certainly NOT recommend to go there (if it wasn't for the lovely tents maybe) it was a complete disappointment.

However I would suggest to the very friendly Managing Director to take his crew on a trip to Garden Route Game Lodge for a service training and get an idea how else you could be dealing with your guests.

We were lucky enough to get a last minute deal at Buffelsdrift which made the stay even more enjoyable! We had never been "glamping" before but can highly recommend it!! The tents were fabulous, more like 5 star hotel room, beautiful bathrooms with outside shower and bath overlooking the lake. We went on a bush safari and were lucky to see rhino, giraffe and many kind of antelope!! We also spotted the hippo in the lake! Food was excellent and all staff very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be back!!

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for the lakeside tents, the ones at the far end of the lake are quieter.

We went to Buffelsdrift for our first part of our honeymoon. We spent 4 nights at the luxury tent. Reception and the staff is of good quality. Good service and a genuine smile.

The good; the scenery and the nature. Also the design of the lodge, everything fitted perfectly with the environment, that gave you the feeling of Wilderness even close to civilization. Great combination!

The restaurant is of good standard, not outstanding in any way; but nothing negative! You will not feel cheated in any way, and its very good value for money! The wines are local, but not bad at all! Not at the same level as in Cape Town, but far from bad.

The average; the weather can change quite quick in Oudtshoorn. When we went for dinner at the restaurant, it was sunny, however it started to rain without any notice. It would be nice if they had a turn down service to close the tent for us, since when we came back, the wind had opened the tent and the rain made it all wet inside, even our bed. However they cleaned it up quite quick, but nevertheless not perfect. (since in between the layers of the tent its dirt and it makes the water coloured and it stained our clothing)

When we left we had a perfect stay, and we left 3AM and got a breakfast bag at departure! That was a nice gesture! Take my advise and stay for a night or 2.

We stayed here for 3 nights and loved it overall. The atmosphere is wonderful and the tents are comfortable and luxurious while maintaining a real bush experience. We were so pleased to see hippos right outside our room every day!!! The food at the restaurant is delicious! Make sure you have the Ostrich fillet.

We did not make use of the activities so our comments do not reflect this aspect of the service.

From the moment we checked in the service was shocking. The reception staff had a very bad attitude and were not welcoming. Overall the service at the restaurant was slow and unfriendly (aside from the food and beverage manager and one or two staff members). The towels at the pool were not changed regularly. The only person who delivered a wonderful and friendly level of service was the lady from housekeeping who delivered delicious fudge each evening.

I booked a new year get away to Buffelsdrift for the family because I had visited before & really enjoyed it, from my original booking, the group numbers did alter & the bookings staff were very accommodating in allowing the alterations.
On arrival on a Very hot day, we were welcomed (less welcome drinks!) & shown the various tents booked, in general all the tents are Amazing, although it is because of small oversights in cleanliness that this review did not earn 5 stars, (old takeaways in bar fridge & Lots of ants in the room).
That said, the setting that Buffelsdrift has is second to none, the 2 - 3 hours before sunset & sunrise are stunning times, I would say the best times of the day here, where the whole watering hole/dam comes alive.
The restaurant serves good food, with a decent selection on the menu & a very good breakfast spread.
All in all a very good lodge, don't expect to see any predators here, but on the game drive plenty of buck, birds, great views from the top, hippos, meerkats, giraffes & more.
Our game drive specifically was a little rushed, about half way round,, they have a view point with some great views, we were only allowed to stop there for 10 minutes before the 'picnic' was packed up around us.

Had been before, we came back & will most likely be back again before long.

Room Tip: If you have a tent in the front row, you have some noisy neighbors, in the way of about 1000 Egyptia...

Thank you for a thorough review. We would like to apologize for the cleanliness not being up to standard, old takeaways and ants in the room are unacceptable. This incident will be addressed. We are glad that the overall experience created fond memories, especially those of the majestic Klein Karoo sunsets and we are excited to welcome you back to our Lodge again in the near future.
