“Escape the hustle and bustle of the city”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

What a truly magnificent way to spend a night out in the Karoo. We left the City of Cape Town in floods and arrived to the most perfect welcome and sunset, followed by sun downers to the sound of hippo's wallowing and a wonderful dinner with fantastic service. Even though the temperature was close to freezing we slept with our luxury tents open to let in the fresh crisp air and uninterrupted view of the stars. We were woken to the sound of birds and then then spend the morning witnessing Meerkats venture out of their burrows, one by one to soak up the sun before starting their daily routine. Thank you to all the very warm and informative staff for making our stay a very memorable one. Well will be back. Thank you from Bushbaby Tours

WE are a family of 4, with boys of 8 and 11. They were so excited to be sleeping in a fancy tent...which is very different to our usual camping. The tent was luxurious, has a hot outside shower, comfy beds and a beautiful view of the dam. Right across from us were 3 hippos basking in the sun. The boys slept on mattresses on the floor , which made the tent a little bit of a tight squeeze, but it didn't really matter. The tent was warm on a cold Karoo night and we had a fantastic breakfast at the restaurant the next morning. Well done Buffelsdrift.

Room Tip: Ask for a tent on the water.

Can highly recommend staying at this place. We stayed for 3 nights in a luxury tent overlooking the waterhole where we watched hippos bask in the sun. It was so peaceful and tranquil. Then tents were clean, had a beautiful bathroom and spacious sleeping area with aircon/heaters. The food was great - lovley restaurant. Staff friendly. Game drive was fun and ranger knowledgable (We had Elton - he was lovely and so passionate about his work and nature). We had a great time and hope to return soon.

Right from arriving at the entrance the reception received was professional and the staff were awesome. The views from the main building and our tented accommodation across the waterhole with the mountains in the background, brilliant. Food was great in the restaurant and Hanro was an exceptional guide on our game drive. Definitely worth another visit.

Room Tip: Ask for accommodation on the water, the first row of tents.

All in all we had a nice stay at the Buffelsdrift: the tents are idyllic located around the lake. And when you have a lake front tent you have a deck as well: we watched the most stunning sunset.
But for cold winter conditions this place is not really comfortable for many reasons:
Although the tent is provided with an a/c which can also be used as a heater, it switches off automatically at 10.30pm. Switching it back on has to be done manually. Which means that it is freezing cold (we had night frost!) in the tent when you wake up (remember you are still in a safari tent made of canvas!).
Secondly: despite the open fire, the restaurant is too big to heat it and to sit there comfortably to enjoy your meal.
Thirdly: when the restaurant closes at 9pm (or when you come back from dinner in the village) you are forced to go to your tent, because they don't have a lounge area where you sit and relax. And in your tent you have to lay in bed under 3 blankets to keep you warm.
Paying 4370 Rand (about €150 per tent per night) in winter is too steep to my opinion.
We also joined their Meerkat Safari: the rangers knew a lot about the meerkats and kept us entertained with their stories and coffee with rusks while waiting for the meerkats to show up.
But still I think that 500 Rand p.p. (about €35) is also way too expensive for a 5 minutes drive to the scene and sitting and waiting there for about 2 hours.
You have to keep in mind that this is South Africa where live is cheap. (to compare: at Addo Elephant Park you pay 380 Rand p.p. for a 2,5 hours sundowner game drive including (alcoholic) drinks and snacks).
Pick this location in summer: it will be superb!

Room Tip: Choose a lake front tent: it's absolutely worth it!

Thank you for the thorough review.

To address the points made toward our Lodge:
1. Due to heavy load shedding in South Africa and striving to be more environmental friendly, we need to control our electricity usage. This includes usage of the aircon units in the tents. We do supply electric blankets on the beds to keep the cold at bay. Our tents are made of canvas that seals with Velcro, which allow our guests to customize the temperature to their liking.
2. Our restaurant is big enough to accommodate day visitors as well, giving guests to our area the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful setting and lovely Karoo hospitality. The fireplace serves for creating atmosphere rather than warmth. Our waiters can provide soft fleeze blankets to the guests for warmth. Our kitchen closes at 10 PM but our staff is on duty until the last guests in the restaurant are ready to turn in for the night. We humbly apologize for this not being the case during your visit. We do however have a lookout lounge with a central fireplace to keep cozy during the chills of winter.
3. We have different packages ranging from Bed & Breakfast only to a Two Day Package, which includes meals, lodge activities as well as surrounding activities. Something to fit anyone’s budget.
4. Our Meerkat Safaris are being offered at the best rate in the Oudtshoorn area. It is truly an amazing experience to see these animals in their natural environment. During the drive to the burrows one also has the chance to spot other wildlife on the reserve.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at our Lodge. We always appreciate reviews and proposals from our guests in order to better our services and facilities for the luxury of future and returning guests. We hope to welcome you back in the Summer as well.
