I was a bit disappointed when arriving in Outshoorn after Plett. Its a big contrast with Oudtshoorn having a frontier town type vibe. However that didn't last long and we totally enjoyed our two nights in Oudtshoorn.

Altes Landhaus is an exceptional property with lovely rooms, food and a genial and friendly host in Helen. They were really nice to us on our honeymoon and we couldn't have hoped for a nicer place to say. We ate in the restaraunt one night and the local cuisine was possibly the best food we ate in SA and that is saying something.

Loads to do in Oudtshoorn such as the Ostrich farm (who knew they were so interesting), the Cango Range (a fancy zoo!), the Swarberg Pass (amazing views though sadly was cloudy at the top when we got there) and the Cango Caves (beware the adventure route, it is a big challenge but very rewarding). We also had dinner in Kalinka in the town, 5 star food but really reasonable.

All in all, a bit surprise. Altes Landhaus is a perfect setting to unwind. Would love to go back someday.

We stayed here for two nights in this 5* colonial house. The owners Helen and Heinz were perfect hosts and all the staff were both friendly and helpful. The food and wine list were superb and the house martins kept the guests amused during the dinner period. The bedrooms were large and well appointed with excellent quality toiletries. The swimming pool was solar heated to 27 degrees and located in a peaceful spot within the well manicured grounds.A gem of a hotel in this wonderful part of South Africa. When staying do negotiate the Swartberg pass-the view from the top is stupendous.

Room Tip: All rooms are well appointed so there would be little difference wherever you were allocated.

Altes Landhaus is everything a 5 star hotel should be. Excellent rooms, a wonderful setting, unfailingly helpful staff, excellent food, fantastic value for money. We cannot praise it highly enough - we just wish we had stayed there longer!

Spent two nights at this country hotel and really enjoyed our stay. Heinz and Helen are great hosts and the rest of the staff most welcoming and friendly. Lovely setting in gardens with a nice pool. Huge rooms with all mod cons. Great meals but only one menu so if staaying more than a couple of noghts could get boring, also not easy to eat out as location is relatively remote.

We only stayed here for one night and were sorry that we could not stay longer. The hotel is stunning and our room was very romantic with 4 poster bed and jacuzzi in the bathroom. Helen is a charming host and made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed a lovely dinner under the stars listening to all the different bird and animal noises and in the morning we were able to relax by the lovely warm pool after we had checked out.
