“perfect stopover”
Reviewed 30 June 2012

A short stint to Oudtshoorn let my daughter and me to De Zeekoe again. It is an old favorite so it was an easy decision. Two years ago we spent a family weekend here. This time we had a chance to stay in one of the new rooms, beautiful bathrooms with outside shower! - pity that it was way too cold! (middle of June) I had a good steak for dinner and my daughter had home made chicken pie and finished it all !!! For breakfast we had a great variety and good coffee for me and pancakes for her.
We will be back and I hope it will not be another two years.

We selected this B&B from a tourist book and had no idea what to expect. We called and requested one of the small lodges since there were 3 of us. We called to let them know we would have a late arrival and they put us in 2 gorgeous rooms that were closer to the main building. They were beautiful with huge bathrooms, patios with chairs - just amazing. They also had a late breakfast for us when we returned from our Meerkat adventure. The food was wonderful in terms of selection and preparation. Everything was delicious - The whole experience was better than we ever imagined.

Situated outside Oudtshoorn, on a working farm, De Zeekoe is surrounded by wide open spaces which are framed by the impressive backdrop of mountains in the distance. Nothing prepares you for the beauty and modernity of this special guesthouse. Recently renovated to a high standard of accommodation and hospitality De Zeekoe is definitely one of those at the top of my list. The attention to detail in the bedrooms and bathrooms is impressive and each evening I enjoyed the comfort and the luxury of my room while gazing out at the beauty of the Karoo.
The reception area is warm and welcoming while the dining room has been designed to absorb the view of the mountains and the spread of the Karoo through the huge glass doors. These same doors open out onto a huge well appointed and decorated deck which overlooks the river bed, swimming pool and Braai area. While I was there I was fortunate to see a variety of birdlife which are resident in the reeds and surrounding area.
Dinner was excellent, with attention to flavor and presentation – the venison and beef could not have been more tender! The breakfast ensures you are not going to go hungry for the remainder of the day and the staff are attentive and willing to please. A memorable stay. Congratulations De Zeekoe!

What a lovely place in an awesome setting. The perfect place to base our selves for a couple of days. It is a family business and we truly felt being part of the Zeekoe family. From gardener to the owner, everybody was extremely friendly, happy and helpful. This is what hospitality should be about! We walked with our pram through the fields of the farm, see the breeding ostriches and enjoyed a trip in the canoe on the lake where the cabins are situated. Being Dutch, we liked the option of cycling in this beautiful area and the fact that it is safe to do so. The restaurant is nice and cosy and the meals are well priced. The Ostrich Fillet we can highly recommend!!
We will definitely be back!!

This is a hard accommodation to rate, it was our honeymoon and so probably not the best place to stay for us, the accommodation is not a hotel more cabins and thre is not really a main gathering point where you can relax, that closes when staff go home. Saying that the rooms were comfortable and the breakfast nice and setting pleasant, but I am not sure I would stay there again. The room was a bit chilly so I didn't sleep too well, but the owner was very friendly.

Dear sir /madam

-'The accommodation is not a hotel' -DE ZEEKOE is classified as a guest farm on 2000 hectares, that offers different categories of rooms - standard, luxury, superior (16 in total)and rustic cabins (4)

'Not really a gathering point'-A public lounge with Ostrich leather coaches, big fireplace, computer (for guests who do not travel with an I pad,I phone or smartphone) and free internet gaurantee long hours to relax and / or to work late in the night, even when the office is closed.

-'The room was chilly'- it is a pity that you did not make use of the electric blanket on the bed and the airconditioning in the room for heating.

-' Rooms were comfortable' - We are upgrading all the rooms at the moment with new carpets and curtains , interior design is one of our passions .

-'Breakfast nice '-We try to cater for every culture . Fresh and organic is our motto. We do cater for gluten free persons

-'Setting pleasant '- DE ZEEKOE offers stunning views on the riverbed and mountains

Wishing you a wonderful future and a blessed 2012.

After a long drive we arrived at the 'hotel' down a long dusty driveway. The welcome was abysmal. The room supposedly one of their best was laughable!! Furniture and decor was too bad be to be true. The room was dirty and a notice on the wall apologised for the smell of sulphur!! The evening meal was barely edible and the service appalling. The breakfast was equally poor. The outside area was tatty with dog mess left on grass outside our room for the entirety of our visit. The quality of the checkout matched that of the welcome. Customer service amongst the worst we have experienced. The meerkat experience was booked through the hotel but they did not even acknowledge we had booked!! We had to make our own way there early next morning so there is no advantage in staying in the hotel! The Meercat Experience however was excellent.

Dear Sassy Sue

I have read your review with a heavy heart.Fitstly I want to apologise for your unfortunate experience ,however;

-Our establishment is advertised as a guest farm, not a hotel, hence the "dirt road and dusty driveway".

-All of our rooms speaks of taste and class . The owner has a passion for interior design.

-"We apologise for the sulphar smell " - We use springwater from the farm and take hands with Eskom , to save energy and water where possible .

-" Dog mess" - There is no dogs on the property - here must be a confusion with another establishment - On DE ZEEKOE , sitated on 2000 hectares, you will find Bonsmara cows, sheep, springbuck , 162 species of birds and of coarse the meerkats ,part of the shy 5 , that boast the meerkatadventures.

-"Food was not edible"-Most of our guests who stay with us more than 2 days, want to have dinner with us each night, that speaks for the demand to our gourmet food .

-"Check in and check out "-4 stunning girls at front of office ,will walk the extra mile to make our guests feel welcome and to make sure that they are well informed about all the activities on the farm and in the area and to make their stay with us an unforgettable one

Blessed future for you

We were on our way from the Garden Route to Cape Town, and at a friend’s recommendation, stayed for two delightful nights at the very lovely and peaceful DeZeeko (superior room), where we had a fantastically enjoyable time. The place definitely is a highlight of our trip to South Africa. We got to know Paula, the owner, and her husband, who were very welcoming and gracious. Our room was very clean, luxurious and tastefully decorated, with incredible views from our veranda. The place is part of a working farm, so we saw various farm animals, including grazing horses on the horizon outside our veranda. Breakfasts were delicious, and the cook happily accommodated our dietary requests. The pool area near our room was very pleasant. Paula also showed us one of their lake lodges which were rustic and very charming. All in all, we’d give it two thumbs, way up!

Room Tip: Choose the superior rooms, which have the best views and a lovely veranda
