“Maintaining excellence”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

A few years ago we stayed at De Zeekoe and were satisfied in all respects. Our recent stay, this month lived up to our expectations despite it being at the end of the Klein Karroo festival which is an extremely busy period for this establishment. The welcome was warm although the booking was at very short notice. The decor of the rooms is reminiscent of photos I've seen of Moroccan hotels. There was a sign in the bathroom apologising for the sulphur smell due to the borehole water but my sensitive nose didn't detect any smell. The substantial breakfast was all we needed before taking to the road again.

Room Tip: We previously stayed in a room with a little private garden which was very nice but this time we wer...

We spent one night in a lake cabin and one in the main facility. The cabin was rustic but attractive; the beds were extremely firm, but we had good nights' sleep anyway in a very serene setting. Being the end of summer, the lake level was very low, so it wasn't as nice as when the lake comes up under the deck. The other room lacked the charm of rough wood paneling and the privacy of the cabin, but made up for it by being close to the other facilities, and by having a much nicer bathroom.

The food was good, and service was attentive and friendly, which was true of all the staff. We arranged horseback riding and massage, and those were both pleasant experiences. Coming out to find our car washed by hand was a crowning touch. Recommended, especially if you are there for the meerkat excursion.

When we arrived here, we were straight away welcomed by the hostess (Ruwena?) who is just full of energy and enthousiasm. She was very pleasant and helpfull and made us feel at home right away. After the check-in she showed us to our room, overlooking the farm and fields.

The room is very spacious, but a bit outdated. This was especially noticeable by the mosquitonet that came down the next morning. The outside shower had so many mosquitos flying around it, that we couldn't use it. The bathroom is very big, with a separate shower and bath and very modern furnished and decorated. The bedroom is a bit on the old side, with a lot of kitsch and ostrich feather pillows to complete the setting. We got a welcome port in our room, which was also a nice touch. The balcony is nice to sit on and watch the sun rise/set.

The restaurant is good, although the food comes out a bit slow. The quality is very good and is definitely a plus for this accommodation. Again the service here was very good and we enjoyed a very good evening meal here.

The reason why we booked this place, like many other people, is that we wanted to do the Meerkat tour. We booked it quite far in advance and were thus (weather permitting) booked for the next day.

The meerkat tour was in one aspect a bit disappointing as there were almost 25 people in the group and you pay quite a bit of money for it. They also promise to send you a picture of you and the meerkats, but in the end we never got this (now almost a month later). Another disappointing factor was the delay in going over, as we stood quite a bit waitiing to go, when some peopler still had to finish their coffee/tea. We arrived and right at that moment they started coming out of the ground. The experience was however surreal and for us, big fans, a dream come true.

Breakfast is also very good and frish and the portions they serve are huge, so inform them if you want a smaller portion.

All together a nice place with goot value for money.

I visited De Zeekoe during April, what a beautiful setting including lake cabins and lovely hiking trails. A peaceful breakaway, with well furnished, clean rooms. The staff, both helpful and friendly, attending to your every need.
Truly ELEGANT South Arican hospitality.

I have not anything bad to say about the accomodation. I just felt it was expensive in relation to the room's presentation. The best aspect was the bathroom ; a separate WC off the bathroom ; free standing shower and bath. The bed was two units pushed together to make up a King BUT there was no converter spread over the two mattresses so a definite " valley " formed during the night - uncomfortable. Our bedroom was classed as luxury. Then why was there not a specific hair shampoo. A combo body wash and shampoo was provided instead. Also stains on the mosquito net and slight tearing of the fabric did not look good.
Loved the little verandah off the room but our view was marred by the high electric fence which started directly from the manicured lawn . All it needs was a softening of local shrubs .
The proportions of the room was perfectly adequate but not luxurious and the price tag leaned towards luxurious.
The meal we had that evening was once again adequate but not the + R500 price tag for two including a bottle of wine and water. Our fillet was maybe fillet maybe not ; it certainly did not have the succulent tenderness associated with fillet. Smothered in a wine sauce , yes it was OK but just that. Another gripe here ; when checking in we stipulated , on their request , what diet we were on. There was no consideration taken of our comments in the meal presentation , so why the request in the first place.

We stayed one night at DeZeekoe to do the meerkat adventure. We stayed in a Luxury Room which was nice and clean with a large bed and bathroom and lots of ostrich feathers decoration. We arrived late afternoon and had some sundowners in the garden before going to dinner. The garden is very nice and has a lovley view over the farmland. We had dinner at the farm, where you can chose from 6 or 7 dishes, which stay the same every night. The food was of good quality, home made style. After dinner we had a nightcap at the fire that was lit in the garden and watched the lovely might sky.

We stayed here for 2 nights. Our room was well appointed, clean and spacious with a wonderful day bed on the patio. Lovely walks on the property and very peaceful. Staff was most helpful. Meerkat tour was great. Would not hesitate to return.
