After a warm welcome of tea and biscuits we relaxed until dinner, where we had such an enjoyable evening with Mary and Dick. Mary is a fab cook and went out of her way to make my vegetarian meal as delicious as the meat eaters. We chatted until late and felt like we had had a really personal experience of South Africa. If your journey takes you near Oudshoorn, make sure you visit Rolbaken and definitely stay for the fine dining and charming company of the hosts.
Thanks again Dick and Mary,
Love Michelle, Pete, Lou and Conor x

A real feeling of residing in the Karoo, with the most hospitable and friendly, helpfull owners being at your service - discover what it is like living away from the mad rush and noise. Go for hikes in the Karoo veld and discover the small wonders that you do not see in cities. Just enjoy being where there is peace and do what you feel like doing. Very worthwhile

The guesthouse is reached via a well- maintained dirt road (please don't be put off, it is easy to travel with a normal 2- wheel drive and the scenery along the way is worth it! Dick and Mary are fantastic hosts, welcoming and informative about the area. The guesthouse we stayed in was a restored schoolhouse, the rooms spacious, the bathrooms up-to-date with the softest towels. The living area includes a bookcase with a variety to read, should you wish. The veranda offers breathtaking views over the farm. The service offered is more than 5*, we opted for dinner as well as B&B and Mary's cooking was absolutely delicious - came away with a recipe or two. Highly recommended!!

This is really in the middle of nowhere and that was exactly what we were looking for. An oasis in the hectic of modern life. Imagine a beautiful stylish building with a spacious common living (to share with maximum 4 other guests), 3 ensuite bedrooms, all with bath and separate shower, a great porch on both sides to watch the landscape and the "rolling mountains". Listen to the numerous birds, lay back and relax. Enjoy the art of cooking of Mary and listen to the thrilling stories of Dick. One wishes this would last forever. We stayed 2 nights and on both nights we loved the dishes Mary cooked. This is a B&B where the host and hostess eat diner together with their guests. Check the website and do not forget to book both the breakfast and diner. One has to provide the stuff for luncheon on their own. Do that for the whole period, as the nearest shop is in Oudtshoorn and that means over 20 km dirt road! We stayed the whole day just enjoying and doing nothing but talk together and play domino with the other guests from Capetown.

We had the best time at Rolbaken. Though only stayed for one night, we managed to feel the deep peace and quiety the place and its views transmit. We didn't actually expect to have a whole beautiful house for ourselves, with plenty room, light and cosiness. The best part of all was the remarkable kindness and hospitality with which Dick & Mary received us. They made dinner for us and sat to have the meal with us, where we spent hours chatting about both our countries. Overall, it was surely an unforgettable experience and we're really looking forward to visit them back!

Words cannot describe, the perfect Hosts Mary & Dick, nothing was too much trouble, The Farmhouse was spacious, clean & had amazing character. Situated in the mountains with stunning views, the 37km dirt track drive to Rolbalken is challenging the first time, but the views of the mountains & ostrich fams along route compensate for this, unfortunatley we did not see any mountain Zebra, We recommend the evening Dinner, cooked by Mary, the nearest restuarant is 37km away along the dirt track. Once you complete the dirt tack the first time, every other time is easy, you must use the GPS co-ordinations otherwise you may find it hard to locate as the farm has no road address. If you want to totally get away and relax, this is the place, trekking the mountains & the farm, sitting on the verrandah looking out for the wildlife. Mary & Dick are the most intersting people, embracing you into the life on the farm, with stories of their lives & the future they plan for Rolbalken, WE WILL DEFINATELY RETURN.

Let's get one thing straight.......if you are looking for nightlife with a pub, night club or restaurant on the doorstep Rolbaken is not for you. It's quite a distance from Outdshoorn and is accessed along a dirt track some 19 km from the tarmaced road.

However, if it's peace, tranquility, nature, comfortable accomodation, domestic and wild animals and the best hosts in South Africa with some great home cooking then look no further than here.

Five of us stayed in the three rooms in the guest building for two nights earlier this month and we all agreed it was a fantastic experience and one we can't wait to repeat.

Hosts Dick and Mary are so friendly and welcoming and really do go out of their way to make you feel at home. Whilst there is a self-catering option I would strongly recommend you take the full dinner, bed and breakfast as Mary's meals are quite simply outstanding.

The couple have three dogs who are very friendly and once they know you want to pet them they will not leave you. There is also a donkey by the name of Flopsy there were two that had been rescued for a sanctuary but the other died not long ago). I went with my daughter (who by the way is 23) to meet Flopsy and Mary gave us some carrots to feed her. She was so friendly and even posed for photos.

After the meal on the second night Dick pointed out the various stars in the sky.

All in all this was probably the best accommodation of our four week stay in South africa.

It's a well worn cliche but we really did feel like we had arrived as strangers and left as friends.
