Backsberg Restaurant situated on the wine farm of Backsberg in the Simondium area offers excellent food and a wonderful atmosphere under the trees for Sunday lunch(spit braai) at a very reasonable price for both food and wine at cellar prices.............not overcrowded and I hope it stays that way as there is nothing worse than having to jostle for food.
Wonderful spread , friendly staff and great music...........keep it up Backsberg!

It is a huge pity that SOME restaurants in this area think that just because of the surroundings, everything else needs very little attention and can be over priced.
The food (buffet) was really just average. The tables, chairs, linen an cutlery quiet poor and at R200 per CHILD per head - Backberg will never see us again.
There was nothing about the total experience that warrants a R1000 bill for a below average Sunday lunch for 2 toddlers and 2 adults.

We went back to Backsberg for the Sunday spit-roast after our first visit a month earlier. Some things better, others need improving.

Positives:
The salads are much improved increasing from 4 to 7 options on offer. Particularly liked the mushrooms and also the green bean option. Wine prices still very reasonable. Exc background live music. Couple more desserts on offer esp the FRESH fruit salad! Luke worked hard as our waiter.

Negatives:
April 27 and fine weather. But management overbooked and long queues at spit roast told the story. But to their credit the luncheon never ran out of meat despite rushing into town to top-up. Whole lamb still overcooked and on several cuts on the dry side. Guests can choose their preferred cut... so why not offer SOME pinkish/medium meat rather than EVERYTHING well-done? Vegs remain limited. Brilliant roast potatoes, wild rice is fine.... but always just steamed pumpkin along with cauliflower soaked in a tray of white sauce with a sprinkling of broccoli! Why not make broccoli or spinach/other green a separate dish? The outstanding fresh fig option was not on offer. sigh. Probably a seasonal thing.

Double negative: Order a 'double expresso' and you'll pay double. First time for us and we've drunk hundreds. Usually it's a 50% premium.

Comment: Backsberg have a good and popular formula: Cook lamb a bit slower and bit less, add greens and it's a winner. Desserts are fine including exc malva. Overall good value (R215) considering one can have double serving of everything.

Observation: We discovered Backsberg wine via their Sunday lunch. Now we buy Backsberg wine in shops. Keep lunch/restaurant good value and wine sales will flow.

Tip: On our 2nd visit we recognised several guests from previous visit. Vary the veges/desserts each week to keep the interest going.

One other: On paying no 10% discount voucher for return visit to restaurant on offer. Has this offer disappeared?

Had their Sunday buffet today. It was the worst buffet ever! Starter: butternut soup/liver pate and dry bread. Main: only good thing was the roast potatoes, the spitbraai- the dried carcass was served! Dessert: some baked pudding, which only 2 people dared to try, custard, tiny Swiss roll, pavlova and fruit. No child friendly dessert. Only saw our waiter twice: for drinks and when I went looking for the bill. Would not recommend it.

Tried Backsberg's Sunday lunch 'lamb on a spit'. For R215 you can make unlimited visits to the buffet serving: 4 entrees, roast lamb, 5 salads including an exc fig salad along with a Waldorf style, 4 cooked veges, and 3 deserts. A good selection although i would prefer more 'greens'. The experienced live musician enhances the outdoor ambiance although i wouldn't want it any louder. Wine is very good value with Backsberg 2nd tier wines selling in R16-20 range.... per glass. Cellar tasting adjacent to restaurant. Nice touch was 10% discount voucher valid for next 5 weeks but not on Sundays or public hols. One whinge: Entrees do not cater for 'gluten free' guests. A hearty luncheon buffet and wine route experience... and def worth a visit. 4.5 stars.

Tips: Book early for Sunday lunch which is 12-3.30pm sharp. Buffet is ONLY option on Sunday, but extened menu rest of the week.

Note: The winery sign is large but too close to entrance and you will overshoot on yr first visit.

Unusual: This is the first restaurant we have visited that has posters displayed requesting guests to post a review on TA. Indicates management do read what guests write.... another positive.
