We played Falcon Golf Course in early March (3/2/2010) for the kick-off round of our 2010 golf trip. We got off the plane, grabbed our bags and clubs, got the rental van and headed for the course. The course is located just south of Luke AFB off of Camelback Road, in Goodyear. The drive from the airport took about 30 minutes.

Here’s the deal. We teed-off at 2:00. The greens fees were $20 for 18 holes and cart. This is not resort golf; it is more of a municipal type course, but fit our needs for a warm-up round. The course was in good shape all around. The tees were in good shape, fairways were green and lush and the greens were in great shape, although a bit shaggy and a little inconsistent in terms of speed. This is a desert course, as you might expect in this area. The desert areas of the course are not manicured, as you would see in a more upscale course, but you could still play from the desert, in the event of an errant shot (not that that ever happens). The layout is interesting, generally open, and no blind shots. It is not a long course (6700 yards from the back tees; we played the white tees at 6300 yards;; there is also a forward set of tees with a yardage of 5600), but does have a nice mix of long and short holes (par threes ranged from 110 to over 200 yards; reachable and 3-shot par fives; and par fours of varying length up to about 430 from the white/middle tees). The bunkers were fairly packed and the sand was wet and heavy; there was rain in the area the previous day, so that could explain the sand conditions. Also, I thing the course would be walkable, as the distances from green to tee are far, and the course is fairly level.

Pace of play was about average. We started at 2:00 and finished a little after 6:30. There were about three areas were the course backed up, the first at number 6 (par 3) and again at number 8 (the other par 3 on the front). The back went much smoother, as I think some groups ahead of us did nto make the turn.

The clubhouse is very basic and there is only a snack bar. There is a driving range a putting green for warm-up. The staff is friendly and very laid-back.
If you are looking for high-end Phoenix golf, this ain’t it. But, if you want to play a nice, but no-frills, course, Falcon is a good choice.
