“Stunning place and stunning food”
Reviewed 5 November 2013

South Africa was amazing in general. The people, the food, and the sheer beauty of the landscape. Despite its bad press everyone should take a trip whether to go whale watching or hang around Camps Bay or take an amazing drive along the garden route.

This restaurant along with the De Graff was superb and amazing value. Most certainly will be returning. Fantastic! How good food should be served.

“This will take your breath away - and I am not talking about the views!”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

I was so happy when an ex-colleague from my radio days invited me to join her at Tokara for a restaurant review, specifically for two reasons – the restaurant must have one of the best views in the Cape and secondly because of the reputation for unique food combinations that will take your breath away!
Well – I was not disappointed with any of the above. The views are truly spectacular and I especially loved the half circle tables for two, strategically placed to give you prime views of the sloping hills decorated with vineyards and the valley that goes on forever. I can imagine that it must be equally spectacular in winter if the valley fills up with fog and you sit in front of the huge fireplace, sipping one of the nice wines on offer.
So, let’s get to Richard’s food. What can I say? During my travels and endeavours I was privileged enough to eat at some of the best restaurants in South Africa. I will rate my food experience at Tokara as one of those bests. Richard, who is a self taught chef, has a unique talent of putting together the most interesting (and often unusual) elements to create a wonderful taste experience.
One such dish is his Baked Alaska trout with home made ice cream topped with caviar. I am not a fish person and would not have ordered this and it is not on the menu, but Richard insisted that we try it and what an amazing experience! It is the combination of salt and sweet, of fish and ice cream and all the extras that will make this a dish to remember! There was a couple sitting behind us who immediately ordered this – so I could only gather that they came specifically for this special treat!
I did not think anything else that followed would be able to top this Baked Alaska Trout, but then it was dessert time. And just by looking at the menu I wondered why I did not stick to my initial plan just to have 4 desserts for dinner! Before I could make a choice Jaap Henk (who is one of the managers and a sommelier) suggested that I try the Chocolate sandwich. This was a dish Richard designed for Master Chef and the participants in one of the semi-final rounds had to prepare this.
A combination of many elements, most of them chocolate, so decadent that it will you will have to run home to get rid of all the kilojoules - but so amazingly fantastic. This is an absolute must if you are a chocolate lover. What I loved is Richard’s quirky way of hiding the elements of the dish and setting you of on a taste discovery adventure.
I immediately decided that there will be no 50th birthday party (which is soon!) – rather just decadent desserts at Tokara! Thank you guys for a fantastic experience and I will definitely be back soon!

“Disappointing but great views”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

Worth going for the views but the service is nothing like the level at which Tokara aspires and well below it's neighbour Delaire. Food was pretty good but the white wine was disappointing. In an area with so many outstanding properties would probably give it a miss

“Elegant dining with beautiful views”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

We had a table for 12 on a cool, cloudy day, but the food and service was excellent and the views outstanding. Menu included springbok, fish, and several steak items...no salad options.

“What a Food”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

First the location, out of Stellenbosch, up in the vine lands. You can go there just to purchase some good South African wine or do some wine testing, but it will be a shame not stoping there and enjoy the great view on the vineyards and Cape Town.
Service in the restaurant is excellent. Food is innovative with a mix of flavors which could be sometimes considered as strange but really worse thing.
You must try the Spinbok with the Lobster bisque sauce, the mix can again look really special but really excellent. Ostrige filet is also excellent.
Wine proposed is of course the local one (we are in a wine farm) but can also be from some other producers from the neighborhood at reasonable prices.
You should spend the extra half an hour driving out of the city to eat there.
